I don't really consider fan made wiki's as proof of canon.

Megaman 9 is pretty much what established what is and isn't canon for the classic series - Megaman 1-8 and Megaman and Bass were all alluded to when Megaman confronts Wily and recounts all the time's they've fought. Since the Gameboy games, Soccer, Power Battles, Wily Wars, and Battle and Chase were not shown, I think it is easy to argue they are not canon.

As for Keiji Inafune addressing anything, I don't know if he actually can anymore. As he doesn't own the rights to Megaman and is no longer with Capcom, I don't think he can probably say anything about the series that hasn't already been said without referring to a Capcom spokesperson.

Someone mentioned Classic Megaman references in Megaman Legends - as there weren't any actual plot elements included as there were from X and Zero, I don't know if that would count. It's one thing to have the entire Elysium and Neo Arcadia storylines echoed in the Legend series plot but just having a "Protoman Shield" is more of a nod. In game, they reference an old video game called "Megaman" which is where the English language localization claims Roll got the idea for a name for Rock Volnutt.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I never got the impression that he looked at X as a model influence, rather he was kind of X's mentor but in kind of an annoying way. Just always shoving it in his face that he was the S Rank Hunter, above X, "be careful X!" despite being one of those characters behind the scenes in the first three X games while you do all the dirty work (aside from some obvious scenes, like the stuff with Vile in X1, and I guess it's obvious why he was gone for X2 for most of it).

So yeah.

But to just be blunt about it, my avatar might say enough. Protoman is the real red boss in my book and he was more like the anti-hero or just did whatever he wanted whenever he wanted. Flute plays and uh oh, is he going to help you ... or not? Haha.

I never really got the impression that Bass and Zero were all that similar either to be honest, other than the whole moral conflict I guess. Bass was never one to completely obey Wily, but it always seemed like he was hell bent on taking down Mega Man and proving who was superior.

I just love how confusing it gets with who created who as well, Protoman coming from Dr. Light, Zero's from Wily, and Sigma comes from Dr. Cain (good guy). Funny how that all worked out.
I think Zero was a polarizing character here in the states, but more popular than X in Japan. I remember intense arguments back in the day between X fans and Zero fans, but I always heard that he was massively popular in Japan and seen as the really hero of the series because apparently Japanese people just really dig that whole samurai thing. Now, that I think about it. I would imagine some people might have hated Zero for seeming like a Proto Man replacement in the new series, while Mega Man X really came across as an updated Mega Man to keep blue bomber fans happy

I didn't view Zero as annoying in MM X 1. He's not shy about pointing out how powerful he is, but he's simply stating the facts. He's actually pretty nice in that he encourages X after Vile kicks his ass by telling him that he will get stronger and will eventually become as powerful as Zero. He also acknowledges later in the game that X has accomplished that very feat. In reality though, X was always as strong as Zero. He just didn't have the battle experience

Yeah, I get what you're saying about Zero being in the background. I always imagined Zero was going through his own set of stages that we never got to see. It was also implied too that he was moving ahead of X in the final stage, thinning out the enemies. He then takes Vile head on by himself.

I thin it's interesting that Cain created Sigma, yet it was Wily's virus created for Zero that really made Sigma into a dangerous threat far above any other reploid. You gotta respect Wily, he was a badass inventor.

Going off something Gamerforlife said, are X and Zero really that much stronger than Megaman and Bass?

Assuming for the sake of discussion that they do exist in the same universe, X and Zero are supposed to be to Megaman and Bass as the computer you have in front of you now is to what you would have been typing on 20 years ago. Each was made with decades of extra experience and technology compared to Megaman and Bass.

Also, Zero and X have the ability to reason and plan ahead - something Bass and Megaman never did. They have personality chips but they are not sentient like the reploids in the X series are.

For those of you who are Zero fans, here's some interesting trivia I copy and pasted from another site

"It's rather interesting how Zero, a creation of Dr. Wily, actually ended up fulfilling Dr. Light's dream instead of Wily's - in conclusion of a lifetime fighting against hordes of Reploids based off of Light's creation, no less, whose leaders and/or master manipulators often carried even darker ambitions than Wily"

"Having been completed by Dr. Wily between the Classic and X series, Zero is the longest-lived robot in the Robot Continuity, with an (ultimate) age of termination of 300+: 100+ for the time between the Classic and X series, 100+ more for the Maverick and Elf wars, another 100+ for the inactive hibernative state in which he begins the Zero series, and 4 for the whole of the Zero series."

"Zero, or some signature of Zero, appears in every series in the main timeline (in the classic series in Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters, throughout the X and Zero series, in the ZX series as Model Z, and in the Legends series in the form of his Z-Saber/Zetsabre). He is the only character in the entire franchise that appears in every main series thus far. Additionally, he appears in Mega Man Network Transmission as Zero.EXE."

Does Zero living on as Model Z count as him being alive? That IS his soul technically, infused inside a Biometal.

Actually, I think that's pretty weak evidence. While it clearly only referred to the numbered games in the main series, that doesn't mean everything else is non-canon. It's pretty common for a series retrospective to exclude "gaiden" side-stories--even if they are considered canon--because they are of lesser significance or generally superfluous to the main narrative. Other games in the main series have included nods to or cameos from "gaiden" games: Mega Man being able to kick a ball very well in MM8, Reggae showing up in MM7, the Mega Man Killers in MM10, etc.
As for Keiji Inafune addressing anything, I don't know if he actually can anymore. As he doesn't own the rights to Megaman and is no longer with Capcom, I don't think he can probably say anything about the series that hasn't already been said without referring to a Capcom spokesperson.
Fortunately, he made statements confirming the Classic-X-Zero-Legends chonology a very long time before quitting, while he was still primarily in charge of the brand. Regardless of the spinoff material, I think it's safe to consider that canon until such time as a newer game contradicts it. Until that happens, it would be of very dubious merit not to take him at his word.

As I mentioned before, specific plot elements from the classic series couldn't be included in subsequent series because INAFKING wanted to leave the classic series open for further expansion without writing it into a corner.

That's actually disappointing to hear.

Yeah I'm biased. I like the classic series and characters best.

Regarding all of Gamer's Zero quotes, what's up with the Zero love? Why is he so significant compared to the freaking main character? It actually bugs me.

I'm asking you guys a lot of questions. I'm sorry.

Keiji originally wanted the Mega Man X series to be all about Zero, which he later accomplished with the Mega Man Zero series.

Personally, I feel that Zero is what makes the Mega Man X series interesting. Much of the mystery of its storyline and arguably much of its conflict originates from him. Sigma goes evil because of Zero and Zero's body parts, virus, and DNA cause problems in MM X 2, MM X 5, and MM X 6. Plus, the series was always keeping our interest with hints to Zero's past. Zero is really what tied the MM X series to the classic one when Sigma says in MM X 2, "you're the last of the doctor's creations"

However, it's interesting to me that much of the bad stuff that happens in the Mega Man X and Mega Man Zero series can arguably be traced back to X. Every evil reploid is a robot based off of his design and given free will like him, making Dr Light the most awful man in the MM X and MM Z series history for creating robots with free will. At least in the classic series you could blame evil robots on Wily
