No tabs on the Jap ones...

Anyways, I keep them on when they have one. They are part of the box and that's how they sold them. Saying the tabs are just generic is bullshit IMHO. That's like saying the cases themselves are generic, and only keeping the game, inlay and booklet...

But let's be honest. I'm not the only one that ever thought about hanging all of them on a wall. Like, making a Mega Drive / Genesis wall. Surely there must be others...

Now I feel bad for cutting those 2 off.

Fine, I'll start leaving them on. I guess it really doesn't matter anyway (unless you store your games in drawers etc.)

I have way too many Genesis games to hang them on any wall.
everytime you cut a gensis hang tag off god kills a kitten
What if I don't believe in god? Do I have to find a kitten and kill it myself or can I get someone to do it for me?

I think you can contract out Haliburton to do the job. I'm pretty sure they'll do it for free too. Just gotta sign away your soul. But if you don't believe in those either, you got yourself a pretty sweet deal!

I leave them on. Not sure why you'd want to cut them off in the first place. Sure, to make everything look even on a shelf but I wouldn't sacrifice part of a case just for that reason. The tab makes it feel more complete. If I buy a game that doesn't have a hang tab I'll still buy it as long as it's in good condition though. Also, it's not like these cases are reproduced so I'm not going to cut them off. It's like cutting off the carry handle that came with the JPN MD1 box to make it look like every other box, though that is a bit extreme compared to the games.
What a maneuver!

So, is the tab more important than the presence and/or condition of the manual? What about if the registration card is missing?

If they have them on there I leave it that way. Breaking them or cutting them off just makes the box look less complete or damaged. But I won't turn away a game just because the tab is cut off; it probably holds the least importance to me in terms of CIB.

I have just one box that hasn't had the tab removed. Looking closely at it, it seems fairly obvious to me that the case was intentionally designed to make it easy to cleanly cut away the tab. I can't think of another likely reason they would mold the plastic thinner where the tab connects to the rest of the case than the rest of the tab, other than to make it easier to cut. Doing so not only makes the case look better on the shelf, but it also makes the case match the profile of its Asian counterparts, which I think lends my conclusion some additional credibility.

If the tab was designed and intended to be removed, I don't think that makes a game without one less complete than a complete SNES game without the original shrink wrap and hang tab--Sega just chose a different method of attaching the tab. At worst, it merely makes the game more used, or "less minty." The only reason I would feel guilty for cutting one off now is that it has already survived for so long as to have some minor historical or nostalgia value. If I had cut them off myself back in the day, I would feel no regrets about it now.
