The ribbon

Post by andyfrueh »

:?:

I have a Saturn model 2 and the mod chip. I've had no luck making it work...drive doesn't spin up at all, but it works fine when I take the chip out. I'm using the A+B method.

One thing...the instructions say:
"...twisted white ribbon cable running from the center of the system..."

My ribbon cable has no twists. It's fairly short and very straight. Should I twist the cable and install the modchip otherwise normally?

Does no one know anything about this?

Have you other folks had Saturn CD drive ribbon cables with a twist?

I dont think that mine had a twist either. I seem to remember that the chip didnt work at first so I turned it round and tried it that way, which would amount to the same thing as twisting the cable wouldnt it?. I cant remember whether or not that solved it but it certainly didnt harm anytihng

sorry about being so vague

I know when I got my chip, the wires on it seemed somewhat loose... so I resoldered the wires to the mod chip just to be sure.

Not sure if that might be a problem with anyone else out there.

I'll double-check the wires on the chip, then.

The ribbon cable isn't long enough to insert into the chip if I install the chip backwards.

Recommendations on a source for a longer (and perhaps more pliable) ribbon would be appreciated!

I had what sounds like the same symptoms when I tried to install the chip with the same method in my straight ribbon, 16 pin model. I couldn't get it to work, so I just got another saturn. I do the swap trick for all my games and kept the old saturn for the cdrom drive, in case my swapping kills this one.
My second newly obtained saturn ribbon is twisted (creased in a different direction) and the other isn't. The one that is twisted was a region-modded unit (with switch on side) that I bought on ebay, so I don't know if it was before or after the modding procedure.
This sight http://www.angelfire.com/pa/Raluminat/forsale.html sells ribbons for the 21 pin model 2, but not sure what difference it makes because I put the cd rom drive from my straight-ribbon 16 pin model in my creased ribbon 32 pin model and it works properly. Also, Im not sure if that store is still functioning.

Well thanks, Nate. That's been about the best lead I've had so far.

Unfortunately, all they have in stock for Saturn are 2 mod chips. They're out of pre-modded consoles and ribbon cables.

I'm pretty much close to giving up on this unless I can find a source of those pre-creased (or longer/more flexible) cables or pre-modded Saturns. :(

When i modded my first saturn my ribbon cable wouldn't work with the chip but it did with originals. I kept messing with it so much it eventually got damaged and couldn't use it with originals. Lordofduct sent me a spare one he had after i messaged him on sx and it fixed the problem.
