Let's have some well-thought out, reasoned arguements~ :)
How is me wanting to play a game, not watch a slide show not well-thought out? It's a fact and I honestly hate games with choppy frame rates, hence my animosity towards most 32/64 bit games. You may not have been targeting me with such a comment, but saying that such an aspect isn't a good reason is just being inconsiderate and imbecilic.

Well thanks for telling me that they're great games. I'll make sure to buy them just because you said so.
People can hate on this game for having sex or violence on it, for having a large fan base (including obviously a lot of morons) or for the countlss rip offs but who really cares?
But my question to people is why do these games need to have sex? Or Drugs? I mean, violence, whatever, all M rated games these days have it, but I doubt if GTA was a good game that getting rid of prostitutes would make it any worse. It's just an example of Rockstar doing something for the sensationalist reaction they know they will eventually get. After the media attention GTA3 got, Rcokstar just kept upping and upping their games until they got to the points of hot coffee and man hunt two, where it went past being a game for the sake of playing it as a game to people playing it because some said it was bad or because they know any respectable parent would disallow it. I absolutely love it when people down play the sales for or by minors for these games. Sure, Rockstar may say they don't want kids buying their game, but let's be brutally honest: they're a company. All they want is your money and as long as it's green, they won't have any quips until someone tries to take it from them. That's the only point when they decide to keep themselves in check a bit, considering the whole Ao fiascos with GTASA and MH2. There is a point where a game is an art medium, but companies and journalists seem to make such a comparison without thinking that artists suffer for using their medium in the way they wish almost 100% of the time. If one were to say that Rockstar aren't selling out and are being "artists", then they should take their Ao and be fine with it. Oh, except that they won't make money and that's all they care about in the end.

I agree, I was totally not on the bandwagon for GTA3, just went way too overboard on the violence department, but I did enjoy 2 on my friends Dreamcast, then he sold it without telling me >.<

IMHO GTA is win in the scripting department. Something quite a few games don't even touch upon. I have always had a tendency to stick to the missions and progress the storyline which somehow has pulled me in for Vice City and San Andreas, this makes it seem more linear and I kinda get bored quickly when I'm not on some kind of mission. Oh and a side note, I really want to play Bully because it supposedly has a good storyline.

Forgive me for being short-sighted then, but I don't see how the gameplay in GTA games is poor. I mean sure, the driving physics aren't the most realistic model of how real driving is but if it was hard to drive the critics would just pan it for being too hard to grasp. Or the shooting isn't as twitchy as an FPS but I think some things have to be simplified purely for playability. If a game is too hard it won't have mass appeal, which at the end of the day is what Rockstar want to achieve. You've got a hard case on your hands if you want to prove that any games developer doesn't want to be successful. Yes there's integrity to be taken into consideration but if you create critically lauded games i think you would be very proud of your products and lineage. I know i would. So what if there's a few people on a forum who hate on your game. It always happens. There's always the 'i don't like it because it's popular'. They think that differing from mass opinion is cool even though deep down they agree. So fool them if they want to be close-minded it's no skin off my back.

I get the jack of all trades thing, but I don't see that as a bad thing.

As for the violence and sex. It's an adult game, hence the 18 rating. You wouldn't complain that The Godfather was too violent. You look at the rating and expect it. Complaining about it is moot. It'd be like reading a book on Golf when you hate golf then complaining that the book was boring because all it talked about was Golf… :?

Sorry if im not making much sense i've been up for nearly 24 hours now doing assignments and i'm having a sugar crash.

1. A slide show is a single frame displayed over a certain period. GTA (on consoles) never hits a frame-rate of 1 frame over any duration of time hence your arguement device is flawed.
2. I'm being called "inconsiderate and imbecilic" for stating my opinion? It's called an opinion; you can debate it by stating that you think the opposite why instead of resorting to immature tactics. Try it some time~

Honestly, with the countless 10 out of 10's, 100's, A+'s, etc, from outlets that usually don't give up these scores, I can't honestly see why a lot of this board is so belligerently against this game. Sure, this is a retro gaming forum but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be able to appreciate the development of our hobby. GTAIV is a benchmark of what gaming can accomplish, a real testament to modern technology. How many games have you played where npc's will hit each other in their cars, exist and talk to one another about it? How many games let you roam around an amazing re imagination of an existing city with 15 of your friends, wreaking havoc? How many games look this damn good for their size? Sure theirs violence but so what. Look at smash tv, slaughterhouse, bionic commando (head explosion), all of which needlessly violent for their time, but with a solid game play structure behind them that makes them classic. Frame-rate your beef? Look to the reviews, rockstar has fixed this problem to a degree, so while yes, there will probably be an occasional hitch, what modern game (and for that matter, sometimes retro) doesn't slowdown at atleast one point of play? My friends, GTAIV is more than just a good game, it's going to be a mark in the history of gaming.

Eh, I've played a bunch of the GTA series, and I actually enjoy them, so I figure I should give my two-cents worth.

When going into a GTA game, I take a moment to think about its satiric representation of what life is like in America. Is life as bad, as drug-fueled or sex-crazed, or as violent in America as the GTA games depict? I don't think so, I feel that GTA is merely a mockery of American society, a parody. Do I think there is an artistic message hidden within these games? Yes, though I doubt Rockstar intended for it to appear. I think when the game creators sat down, they were mostly thinking about making money, and making fun of everyday life in a crime-ridden major city. I think that from this, albeit unintentionally, they've created something artistic, by compounding on ideas already in our society and stretching them to the point that it comes off as actually rather goofy and distorted, but is still a representation of the way things are in certain parts of our country.

There was a story run on gamepolitics.com about GTA ads being banned in Metro stations in Boston. The mayor, Tom Menino, has made the fight against so-called "violent video games" a major part of his policy, and has spent a great deal of effort combating advertisements for a game where people could pick up and beat down virtual prostitutes. The writer discussed the mayor's policies, then went and discussed these policies with the real-life victims of the game: actual prostitutes, the ones who worked the same sections where the GTA ads were supposed to be removed. So instead of combating actual prostitution, Menino was battling video games. This is the sort of thing that GTA is built upon, the contradictions, the crime, just taken above and beyond the norm.

At the same time, GTA also enforces stereotypes across the world about America, though other forms of our media are already hard at work to do so. Apparently the most popular American television shows throughout the rest of the world are The Simpsons and Jerry Springer. CNN runs constant stories about the likes of Paris Hilton or Brittany Spears...no wonder so many nations think so poorly of our society, and no wonder it's so easy for something like GTA to be produced.

GTA are also all sandbox games now, but they let you do more in that sandbox than anything else. Sure, you can bash buildings in Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, get into drug-fueled fire fights in Crackdown, or swing from rooftop to rooftop in the Spider-Man games, but how often can I walk into a local bar and have a nice game of pool or a quick visit to the arcade before rushing across town to grab a helicopter and ram it into a street full of police and rival gang members? As several others have said, it's a jack-of-all-trades game that gives a taste of everything, as if you were just another citizen in a big city able to do all these things.

Is it perfect? No, definitely not. Graphically it's been garbage since GTAIII. There's constant errors, poor framerates, crappy draw distances...all in all, utter crap. The controls for driving and in fire fights are also terrible, giving little control, poor handling, and more often then not resulting in the player getting killed. Depending on the game they even vary from bad to unplayable in certain areas, with airplane controls particularly bad. The game does go a bit over-the-top with its violence and sexuality, and though I'm not bothered by it, I can understand why others would be(to be honest, the poor graphics mix with the violence and I feel more like I'm playing a cartoon than anything else). Also, sometimes the gameplay elements come off as annoying, especially the gang wars in San Andreas. Those pissed me off more than anything.

Do the GTA games deserve a perfect score? God no. Reviewers tend to give higher scores to series that make a lot of sales, like Halo or the Zelda games. In some cases, they even fire employees that give less-that-perfect scores for some releases, or they accept money to raise review scores. I haven't paid attention to reviewers for years now because of this kind of behavior. Instead, talk to your friends about it. They'll have the best opinions. Do I think GTA has a great story? Yes, but it's not for everybody.

To each his own.

This game is a technical marvel. Love it hate it, this is video game technology at its finest. Physics, graphics, cut scenes, writing/script are all incredible.

The first 30 minutes of the game are all I had time to play. Each and every one of them was awesome, not perfect. This game IS worth some of the hype unlike Halo 3 IMO. This is a giant jump for video game technology in general.
