I kind of disagree on the conclusions. I don't think Point & Click went down beacuse they were no longuer the only "cinematic" genre. In fact, I would argue that if your Adventure game is cinematic, it's a pretty bad one. I also don't think P&C adventures can advance much more, they have hit a development wall that is hard to solve.*
I think the companies who made them simply died. Lucasarts decided to leave the field, losing key members in the process, after Grim Fandango. Sierra fell prey to corrupt executives. With the two key players of the genre gone and with many new genres coping the interest, it's no wonder they dissapeared.
Their history is more similar to Platformers than it looks.

What would rescue it is if they really started promoting the tablet releases of them. Episodic tablet point and clicks is very possibly the way the genre could come back to being dominant. Will it happen, no, but I can dream. Speaking of which, I still need to get Back to the Future.

But you need a really good team of writers (and some nice artists) to put forth a well thought-out P-n-C. Now if we can shy away from pixel-hunting, that would be even more awesome.
(Dammit; can anyone name all the characters on their header image?)
