To really appreciate the best in DVD be sure the movie is Anamorphic, unfortunately a lot of new DVD releases don't have this.
...what
anamorphic has been pretty much standard in DVDs for ages now.
NO. Just because they are widescreen does not mean Anamorphic. Less video information resulting in larger black bars then an Anamorphic movie.
...I'm well aware of what anamorphic is buddy. And it's been the standard for widescreen movies for a long time now.
The last major release I can think of that was in non-anamorphic widescreen was the 'original unaltered trilogy' bonus discs from the Star Wars dvds from 2006. Those were laserdisc ports. Other than those, you pretty much have to dig up some pretty old DVDs to find non-anamorphic widescreen.
Other than that, the only thing I can even think of that resembles what you might be talking about with black bars still being there is when movies shot in like 2.40:1 are encoded letter-boxed in 16:9... which, despite the black bars still being there, is still anamorphic anyhow.

Just like your awareness of non skippable DVD trailers? There are releases that are non Anamorphic, go read my CRT vs LCD Guide. Take it a step further and click the Digital Bits Link and the other links I provided there.
Where the hell did you get the idea that i'm trying to deny the existance of non-anamorphic dvds?

I'll rephrase my response to this in a way that's more simple. The vast majority of new widescreen DVD releases are going to be anamorphic. This has been the case for several years now. Anamorphic is currently the standard.
Also I visit Digital Bits pretty regularly when I'm looking for reviews.
Aside from using VLC on a media center PC to avoid the unskippable stuff (UOP - User Operation Prohibited), are there any blu-ray players that ignore the UOP flag?
