...and when asked why the game isn't taking advantage of the better hardware on that system, SE will say "Wii limitations".

Just like they have for FFXI for the better part of a decade (well, "PS2 limitations" there).

Not a huge fan of MMORPG type game and this might scare quite a bit of people. Love Dragon Quest series but I do hope Square realize what they're doing with this series and try not make the same mistake like they latest Final Fantasy 14 online game. I do hope most of the single player type game can be play offline and for those who want to play the online version will have that but won't ruin u to play the game (side quest online while main story offline). But this is Square so this can turn into a big nightmare.

I coulda sworn that in a JP interview that the U-version would have all visuals upgraded from the Wii version.
 (FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

PC (and 360) versions of XI have better visuals too, however, that's not the only thing they need to consider. For example, the UI in XI is constrained. At one point, the ability to add more zones was constrained. Inventory is split up all over the place because the system apparently can't handle more than 80 items in whatever data structure they used for it, and so on. It's to the point that, for the XI community, "PS2 limitations" is kind of a joke, due to how often it was used as an excuse.

A further consideration in general is that XI currently wouldn't even fit on a standard DVD9 (my Playonline folder, not updated since March, is around 11GB). The Wii has hardly any internal storage, and the Wii U seems slated to have relatively little built in as well.
Obviously, games can work with less, but part of what MMOs do is add content over time. Where the Wii U may be set up better for that, Nintendo doesn't even allow the Wii to do software updates. If they expect both games to maintain parity, that'd likely restrict the Wii U version to what Nintendo allows the Wii to do.

Seems like either the online component will need to be limited, or the game will need to essentially be a browser-based game and just be caching things on the fly.
