widescreen tvs are a very recent thing, yes, but widescreen has existed in movies for decades.

And 'nobody complained'? The people who would've been complaining were too busy enjoying laserdiscs.

DVD to Blu Ray is a much bigger quality leap than VHS to DVD imo.
BoringSupreez wrote:An interesting, although different, example of that type of stupidity is the World at War series on Blu-Ray. It was originally made in the 4:3 ratio, as it was a 1970's TV production. When they put it in HD, they didn't want it to be pillarboxed, so they just went and zoomed the picture in until it fit. This left the top and bottom missing, which is even more disastrous than cutting the sides. Even the VHS edition is superior to the Blu-Ray release.
That's completely nuts. Don't they realize that the people who are buying blu ray are the kind of folks who actually care about that sort of thing?

Since we're complaining about aspect ratios, I'm still annoyed that The Powerpuff Girls movie never got a widescreen release on DVD. At least not in the US.

I prefer fullscreen. I don't have a widescreen TV, and the black bars above and below the picture drive me nuts.

well I hate the fucked up framing you get from trying to force a film into a different aspect ratio than it was actually shot in.

Because of this thread I ended up on watching a VHS on a 20 year old VCR and a 25 year old TV. The picture kept fucking up, I can't tell if it was the tape, the tv or VCR that was causing the problems

IMO, I'm opposite. Why do you think so? :?
 (FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

It looks a bit better even in SD, but the HD resolution upgrade really bumps it up if you ask me. This is just taking into account video quality only and assuming we're talking about a VHS in excellent condition btw.

For me the jump from VHS to DVD is a bigger leap, even Laser Disc blew VHS away. DVD with 480p really hit the mark over VHS, Video 8, CED and Laser. BlueRay at 1080p is very good but the difference is not huge compared to the jump from VHS to DVD.

To really appreciate the best in DVD be sure the movie is Anamorphic, unfortunately a lot of new DVD releases don't have this.

anamorphic has been pretty much standard in DVDs for ages now.

NO. Just because they are widescreen does not mean Anamorphic. Less video information resulting in larger black bars then an Anamorphic movie. The biggest headache is there is no standard logo identifying if a DVD has the better Anamorphic coding or not.
