Beginning console mods.

Post by Thamiel »

Hey guys,

Learning to give console modding a go, starting off with something simple. Just gunna repaint and repair a N64 controller I had lying around, controller will be a high gloss hot pink with high gloss black buttons.

Currently primed, paint will come later in the week (payday).

Pretty happy with the finish on it so far, will only require very minor sanding of the primer before applying the first coats of pink. Went all the way upto 1500 grit in the prep phase.

Replace the N64 stick with a replacement gamecube stick for N64. You can find them on eBay...

Just type 'N64 replacement' on eBay and you'll find both the original and the GC version sticks...

Or type this number: 180711765659

Nice, that's cheap...

Here's another one I found on eBay for almost the same price: 130530129272

I'm typing the number, otherwise it would be a Dutch eBay link I post, and I'm too lazy to go to eBay.com to give you an English link...

Are they really that good? The replacement N64 joysticks on eBay aren't news to me, but this one claims it's like a GCN joystick. Is that a fact? I remember the "replacement" joysticks just being working pulls for official N64 controllers, but these are apparently brand new replacements. I remember talking on the forums about these kinds of sticks a while back (maybe a year or more now) but my memory is kinda fuzzy on that. I think we left off with no one actually ever haven tried them, but we were curious to know more about them. Damned if I can find that thread.

Haven't bought one myself just yet. There's always something else coming my way, and I only have so much funds... lol

But from the look of it they are like the real GC sticks. I think they are exact replicas.

So I think they will be better than the original N64 ones...

There's a bit of a difference between the N64 and GCN sticks though. They can't be exact replicas of GCN sticks and work in an N64 controller. I'm not talking about the size/shape, rather, how they function. The N64 stick uses optics for the stick, while the GCN stick and most other sticks use a potentiometer. So these eBay sticks would have to be a replacement designed specifically for the first party N64 controller. They might use pots with some kind of conversion so the controller can understand it.

... And now I remember talking about this in that thread I mentioned. We wanted me to buy one so I could open it up and see what it's all about.

From what I understand they are brand new replacements, the base works exactly the same as an official N64 controller. It's just the stick that is modelled on the GC pad, so its lower than the normal 64 stick, fatter stem and a wider pad for your thumb at the top.

I was always a fan of how the GC stick felt so ill be ordering these for sure.
