Well I didn't say when 'next' needed to be. Just that if it was a sprite based fighter (like, say, Vampire Hunter 3) it was probably on the Saturn but better.

The PS1 definitely had the edge on 3D Fighters, though.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Battle Arena Toshinden

Seriously, maybe not the best fighter out there, but back then I liked it better than Tekken...

And Rival Schools of course...

Hmm, I remember liking Tobal no 2, pretty different for square. Mortal Kombat Trilogy was crazy to get as a kid who played every MK game as they came out. All those characters in one game was just epic.

As for Tekken, I think I liked 2 more than 3. Perhaps it was the epic Devil/Angel last bosses. True Ogre was still cool, but 2 was the first I played, so it has that special place.

I'm not all that into fighters though. I suck at them, and unlike shmups, I can't just say its because the game is too hard.
Tekken 2 was the first one I ever played too, but that was WAY back in the day, so I don't remember much from. I've most recently played 3 and am enjoying it a lot since I actually understand how to play Tekken now. I'll have to go back and look for 2. I liked that it had the Kangaroo and Raptor.

Doubt it. Unlike DC, Saturn is a console I've never been interested in.
I bought a Saturn specifically to play Vampire Savior.

The Saturn cost me like $25 and VS cost me $10.

Just sayin'.

Two words for one of my favorite PS1 Fighter: EVIL ZONE.

What an awesome presentation it had!!! Sure the game play was a bit too simple but i just love the atmosphere it gave out when you got into it! still remember picking it at my local KB toys. Oh what wonderful memories :)

I felt the same way about the Saturn until I snagged one at a price that I just could not refuse. A lot of the US library is crap, but boy, does the system have some diamonds in the rough.

Yeah. The PS1 had about zero bytes of ram for running sprites (most PS1 sprite based games are actually simple polygons with the sprite images popped on top) but it was a comparative beast at running 3D polygonal graphics compared to the Saturn. The Saturn's 3D processor was more an after thought than a real design concept.

On the other hand, the Saturn was one of the all time great 2D sprite crunching machines - but for some reason people in the mid to late 90's thought any game that wasn't 3D polygonal was inherently inferior. Even Megaman X4 got bad reviews.

Well, for my number one favorite PS1 fighter, it'd have to be KOF'99. Main reason being, it was the first time I really had access to a KOF at home (I missed KOF'95), so it was the first time I was able to put some quality time in with the series rather than just dicking around at the arcades when I'd see it.

Others...
Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors - Loved the arcade, so I obviously had to have it.

Pocket Fighter - It was the first time we got to have Street Fighters fighting Darkstalkers. That, plus Tessa's appearance, was all it took for me to buy the game. The ultra zany humor kept me there, though.

Real Bout Fatal Fury Special: Dominated Mind - While the PS1 could have never handled RBFFS proper, they did a damn good job of re-purposing the game into a great fighter for the PS1 - hell, maybe the best 2D fighter for the PS1.

Samurai Shodown IV Special - It's SS4... with Cham Cham. Freaking Cham Cham. You can even sport an evil 'Bust' variation of Cham Cham with an all-new moveset. Sold.

Tekken 3 - I was never huge on 3D Fighters, but I WAS huge on this game. I still play it every now and then. Definitely my favorite Tekken.

Ehrgeiz - Hate all you want, I loved this game in the arcades. It didn't even need the Final Fantasy characters for me to enjoy it, but I wasn't going to say no to them!
