Should America or Japan feel ashame of the lack of "Jrpg"
Should America or Japan feel ashame of the lack of "Jrpg"
seriously, either the rpgs are just ok/mediocre or there aren't that many this generation. Nothing that blows my mind.

Um... what?
If you're asking whether America or Japan is to blame for the lack of JRPGs, then I don't think either of those are the answer to that. The market right now just isn't really interested in the old style JRPGs. So if anybody, blame the consumers.

Older. Not wiser.

Wha? You mean that supply and demand have some kind of relationship!?RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Um... what?

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Yea, I do blame the consumers over here. I also blame Japan for not sticking with the genre or at least keeping it alive over here.

They have stuck to the genre. That's half the problem but that's a conversation for a different thread.JC48573 wrote:Yea, I do blame the consumers over here. I also blame Japan for not sticking with the genre or at least keeping it alive over here.
Developers develop games to make money. JRPG's typically have a very long development cycle and require insanely expensive art assets to please consumers on HD consoles.
That's already two major strikes against the genre.
The kiss of death is that the majority of consumers don't care about the genre. While the RPG fan base is not the minority it was during the 8 and 16 bit days, the glory days of Final Fantasy VII are behind us now.
If you are hungry for JRPG's, buy a PSP or DS. Because that's where they are now. Those two platforms are cheap to develop for, require low production runs to make profit on, and have a large enough install base that there is a hope in hell of making money.

Re: Should America or Japan feel ashame of the lack of "Jrpg"
Americans don't like Japanese games like they used to. Japanese games went from "fucking awesome" to "fucked up gay anime shit where the boys look like girls." It's very sad.
Also, We actually have some decent American games now. Japan has taken a back seat when it comes to video games. I really wish that wasn't the case because I am all about Japanese games, but that's the current reality.
There are still plenty of JRPGs. The Wii just got a bunch of fantastic ones. There are tons on the DS and PSP.

Inazuma kind of sums it up really. Both markets are to blame to an extent. The American videogames market is the new king and what most of the trends are following thesedays, and gaming has just kind of taken a backseat in Japan in general, but the handhelds are still hot there from what I hear. You still see the genre staying fairly strong on those since developers can get by with smaller budgets and don't have to risk much.
NoA obviously doesn't care at all.
Trust me, I'm pissed about it all too.
Although you can do what I've been doing lately and just remind yourself, can you say you've cleared every worthwhile JRPG on the SNES/PSX? Heh, no stopping you from going back to the oldies and hitting up some new ones.

That kind of thinking is all we have left in today's video game industry. I am constantly saddened by all of the bullshit and seeing things get worse. However like you said, there are more than enough good retro games to last the rest of our lives.Xeogred wrote: Although you can do what I've been doing lately and just remind yourself, can you say you've cleared every worthwhile JRPG on the SNES/PSX? I got an RGB modded AV Famicom today. The future looks bright for me. (^_^);

I've noticed this a lot lately on more mainstream game sites and it bothers me. There's a strong air of both xenophobia and homophobia in some people's remarks about Japanese games that gets under my skin.Inazuma wrote:Americans don't like Japanese games like they used to. Well even though the xeno+homophobia is strong in statement, it's sentiments are well understood despite the chosen words. Not only the stuff you guys see, but living in Japan you get to see the full barrage of weirder and weirder stuff that gets made. I saw a kid on the train the other day, maybe 8~10, reading some pretty hardcore stuff. Maybe not tentacle level but hardcore nonetheless.J T wrote:I've noticed this a lot lately on more mainstream game sites and it bothers me. But yeah, I think if I want some "good" JRPGs to play, I've got many from a few generations back to still cover. Still been meaning to play FF9.
