FarCry review
Ok, I'm probably going to be slaughtered for this one, I kept hearing great things about this game and well, turns out I HATED IT.
The game is an open-world FPS in which you play as Jack Carver, a tourist that end ups being involved in a conflict in an island that involves some soldiers and mutants. Sounds fun? It isn't and the horrendous writing does nothing to create impact or emotion. The game's story feels like stuff from a D-List straight-to-DVD action movie and to be honest most of those films end up being entertaining, this one is just plain annoying.
You are allowed to use whatever tactic you want to use (You can try to emulate Rambo, you can stealthily approach enemies or you can mix both) however, enemies seem to be X-Men rejects and they can easily spot you from a kilometer away and it's not helpful that the "Rambo" approach is hampered by one thing: The Difficulty Level.
This is the hardest FPS I've ever played, seriously, it makes Doom's 4rth. episode look like a Sesame Street game in comparison, every attack equals 1-2 hit kills on MEDIUM difficulty (This would be OK on something like Rainbow Six or Operation Flashpoint, this just feels forced) and the ultra cheap mutants you face later in the game are so hard to dodge and kill that they almost render the game as unplayable. The lack of quick-saves (This is a PC exclusive game, how could you forget to add something as common as that?), the incredibly agressive AI and the ultra spaced checkpoints don't help either.
The music is actually pretty decent and it haves 2 or 3 fantastic songs, the guns pack a huge punch and some of the monsters sound fairly intimidating. The island feels truly alive with some great ambient sounds and the industrial areas in the island also sound fantastic. The voice acting is horrendous though, it's really overacted.
As for the great stuff, the game looks amazing and it was a technical achievement when it was released and it's still very impressive. The island is gorgeously detailed, the textures are fairly good and some of the monster designs are pretty awesome. The character models are decent but they suffer from being too shiny. It's still a great looking game though.
Overall, this is a terrible experience, it's frustrating, it's cheap, it's annoying and most importantly: It's not fun to play. FOR MASOCHISTS ONLY

I really enjoyed the game. It was one of the few instances where the campness and overacting actually made the game more fun. The difficulty later in the game is punishing but can be overcome with some tactical thinking and hard work.
I agree that it's not for everyone, but it is one of my favorite pc shooters ever.

I loved Far Cry, it's the closest thing to Half-Life I've ever played that wasn't made by Valve. The ability to play the game stealthily or like a standard shooter was quite fun, and the high difficulty is refreshing after most of today's way-too-easy games. Plus, the single-player's not over in a flash. And it was very well programmed, it looks and runs better on my PC than some games that came out before it and don't look as good (ie, Deus Ex Invisible War, Halo).

The problem is that just like Crysis the game favors stealth way too much.Droid party wrote:I really enjoyed the game. Which I would consider a personal pet peeve on your part rather than a "problem" with the game. I liked your review, but admit that I feel differently about the game to you.KillerJuan77 wrote: The problem is that just like Crysis the game favors stealth way too much.

Re: FarCry review
Back when I played the game, I found it more difficult than your average shooter but not unfair or too hard. I don't remember the end, I probably didn't get there.
And I'm the one who thinks that stealth is what happens when the bad guys hit the ground so fast they didn't have time to eract.

I think I spent more time benchmarking with FarCry than I did playing it, but damn it was pretty hard. If you had issues with it being hard on medium, why not switch to easy?
