Having some trouble getting into Saga Frontier

I just picked up Saga Frontier at a garage sale the other day. I've always wanted to play the game. Graphically, Musically, and Battle system wise, the game intrigues me. But I can't get over the fact that the game seems to thrust player into a world without direction. I really have no clue what do at certain points without going to a guide.

Story wise, the themes and narrative style are very cool. I like the darkness and the adult-ish themes. But, in terms of plot, like game play, I often have no idea what is going on.

Does anyone have similar experiences with the game?

You pretty much described the response that 95% of gamers have to any SaGa game after the 3 gameboy ones.
