Could Virtual Reality make a comeback?

Post by J T »

Sony has a head mounted 3D display that will be released in Japan soon. I always liked VR because it's easy to get immersed in a game that takes up all your vision and allows headtracking. Their device looks pretty slim, which is much better than the heavy clunky VR in the 90s.

It's been over 15 years, iirc, since Nintendo put together the VB. So Sony's got quite a bit of new hardware to work compared to what was used to create the ol' red and black virtual world. I'm actually pretty stoked to see how this one performs!

If they ever made it as good as the Holodeck on Star Trek: TNG, DS9, & Voyager then I would practically live there. I'd only come out for food and sleep, probably. And I'd die very young because of it.

VR is dead. There will be no more Lawnmower Man.

AR however... might be more feasible. Especially in gaming as even RacketBoy's PodCast can attest.

The worst case scenario...

Personal note to try this
A local Indian Casino has a small Arcade in the hotel. Always empty since everyone is on the main floor tossing their money. There is an old VR Arcade in there, I think its Beach Head. I'll have to give it a go, no problem looking silly unless security catches me on the overhead camera and puts me on youtube. At least my head will be covered.

I wonder how good the games will be on the new Sony.

I finally got back to the casino and tried the yellow helmet in the Arcade at the hotel. Spin the helmet screen for a full 360 degree view screen with a little up and down movement. Not bad for an early VR game. It has various Beach Head versions and an Incoming which I played on the Dreamcast. I tried out one of the Beachhead games and machine gunned aircraft. Round two has a flak gun with delayed shots while reloading. Game Over after destroying three ships and getting hit by incoming aircraft.

The real pain of the Virtua Reality game is the Helmet Screen was it was not adjusted right. It spring loaded to the full down position, spinning the screen to face the floor. All was needed is a couple of wrenches to balance the helmet level. Fighting the springs, at least a good workout keeping the guns level.

"Could Virtual Reality make a comeback?" Lets hope it doesn't. That is unless VR involves plugging our brains into a giant computer / networky thing ala Matrix, that'd be cool.

I'm sure this will be the new IT thing in a few years to get money out of consumers!

They've done it with Digital transmission to make us buy HD tvs, then once everyone had an HDTV, They bust out the 3D-HDTV, with the added cost of the glasses!

I'll bet in a few years when everyone does own 3D tvs, something new will come down the line

So can you imagine when new VR headseats come out you have to buy addtional helmets for the whole family!

Hypothetically how much would the whole setup cost for VR? Helmets, sensors, computers and programming will all add up! Not to mention the enviromental issues with power use.

Sure eventually with time these products will be cheaper for the average joe. Progress moves forward so my little rant will be a moot point!
