Never had a professor use a book they've written.
And book buy backs are a great scam. "We'll give ya $45 for this book you paid $150 for, and then sell it back for $125". That's some sweet margin.
Renting books is a little cheaper if the book is applicable to the renting program.

Book A costs $150 new. Renting it costs half the new price so $75; then you return it at the end of the year. That sure beats the $105 you had buying it new and selling it back.

You paid an amount for the class, then on your first day they handed you the required book. It SHOULD be included in the cost of the class, it doesn't make sense otherwise... unless you're talking about the great scam - I mean business model ::wink:: - they have going on.

Well, the worth of a professor is mainly determined by size of class attendance, books and articles published. Hey, it works apparently.

1) Do you go to a highly accredited University? Almost every class I took read something like "Eco1001, Dr.Levy. Books needed: Economy 101 by Dr.Levy ISBN #16528765357".

2) I've never had the option of "renting" a book, but I do borrow books a lot from the library.

I guess I just go to some backwoods university then.

Really? Almost every college I've toured has a book rental program. *shrugs*

Unless I really couldn't afford it, I'm not sure if I would like renting a book anyway. I like to keep my books. Perhaps not for every class, but I would like to keep a lot of them.

I didn't mean to imply anything negative. I remember almost all of my college textbooks being written by professors and considered it the norm for most schools.

Nah, never had the opportunity to rent books from school. It was either buying it or finding a friend who owned a pdf copy of the book. I usually sold most of my books back unless I thought I could benefit from them later. I'm glad I kept the ones I did, and wished I would have kept more.

When I re-read posts I made years ago, it's almost like I'm reading someone else's posts. I can't remember what was going through my head in June 2009 anymore, so it takes away the familiarity. Anyone else the same way?

2009? Man I hate remember seeing some posts of mine on old boards back in the early 2000's. lol, it's a nightmare. Most of those places are dead now though, thankfully! I still frequent Metroid Metal though which I've been registered on since 2003, it's pretty awkward to think about.

I once had a professor use his own textbook in class. The trouble was, English was his third language at best, and he apparently didn't understand proofreading. So there were two Chapter 4s, no Chapter 7, and then the wonderful Chapte R. We'd listen to him lecture twice a week and then get his TA to translate every Friday.

I do have posts out there from before 2009, it's just that they're all on sites I hate going to now. I'm sure if I re-read those older posts, I'd start hating my younger self for being so dumb. I don't exactly stand by everything I said when I was 14, if you know what I mean.
