Sony Trinitron Image Problems (Fixed 9.6.11)

Post by fvgazi »

Fixed: After switching to the S-video cables almost all of the "artifacts" went away. I can live with some of the curvature in the vertical lines. I can't even notice it while a game is in motion. Not to mention s-video looks way better! I won't post pics, but if you really want to see the difference I will. Thanks for all your help, guys!!!

Sony Trinitron
Model:
KV-24FV10
60Hz
Chassis: BA-4C

I've noticed more recently that my image seems to be off center and some of the images are "wavy" where straight lines are squiggly looking, but not moving.

So far it's been really noticeable on my Gamecube and SNES. Both are using composite video. If I change which input they are in (using a different composite..DVD, Game, Input 1 etc), it does not make a difference. My systems in S-Video seem to be fine. I tested my Genesis and Dreamcast. I didn't test it with my PSX or Saturn yet, which I might test later on.

I do not have a remote for the TV, but in the menu there is no option for screen orientation or size. All I can find is a "tilt correction" which does nothing to remedy the problem.

Here are some screens that can hopefully help diagnose the problem. Notice everything is off center to the left.

In the above image you can notice a tiny bit of the screen "wiggle" on the right hand side of the green area.

You can fix the centering problem by getting into the TV's service menu. Google your TV model + "service menu" to find out how to get there (usually involves pressing odd buttons on the remote before powering up the TV). First, power your system up to a screen which is clearly off center. Leave it on that screen. Power your TV off, press the buttons on the remote and power back up to be in the service menu. BE CAREFUL! Make the change, press MUTE to write the change (I think that's the write button on Sony TVs), power off and then back on normally.

Not sure what to say about the squiggly lines.

Be careful
There is a risk of bricking your Sony TV when using the hidden service menu. Over at the AVS Forum, others have lost functions such as 480p on their HD CRTS.

Well... besides not having the remote for the TV, I'm having a very hard time finding the service codes and manuals.

if you're having this problem with a gamecube, try the screen position options in the gamecube settings screen.

Im going to try a few different things. I'll do the gc screen positioning and try to get s-video for all the systems to see if that helps.

I'm purchasing the s-video cables from the racketBOY-store today! I've been meaning to get them for a long time anyway.

SVideo will help the video signal in clarity, but I don't think it will change the slight distortion you have on the bottom right corner. Its still a 480i same resolution signal with Chroma and Luma signals separated. A good idea to get the cable anyways for improved pic quality. Did you try aaron's advice of adjusting the screen thru the Gamecube menu? That should at least get the screen centered.

Need the original not universal remote
The hidden Service Menu might fix the distortion, but have care in hitting the right settings to avoid killing the TV. Since it is a risk, don't take a chance with a universal remote and accidently sending the wrong signal. Since there is a risk, maybe live with the slight distortion?

It's a geometry problem, you'd have to use the service menu yeah.

And the service menu is risky for ANY tv, not just these Sony HDs. Be careful what you're poking around in, might not be a bad idea to go through and write down all of the default values before you start playing around with them.
