As we all know, the video refresh rate for our NTSC-speed consoles is 59.94Hz. This type of video generally captures fairly well (temporally, anyway) into my computer. Recently I borrowed a Neo Geo MVS to capture some Metal Slug X video. It connected to a spuergun and whatever is connected to that is what sets the refresh rate (Jaleco arcade games, for example, are around 57Hx for whatever reason). The MVS video captured a little odd, kind of like Jaleco games to with temporal artifacts (not combing/interlacing artifacts... hard to describe).
I am wondering if the MVS is locked at 60Hz instead of 59.94Hz since it is meant to be played on an RGB monitor instead of a television. Does anyone know? Sorry if I'm not making much sense.
Neo Geo MVS refresh rate?
Re: Neo Geo MVS refresh rate?
Not an expert, but MVS is out-ing 15hz(or whatever arcades need), it's your sync circuit/video convertor in your supergun that get's you comp/s-vid you need to get specs on. It's making it 30/60hz so you can see it on your TV.

Re: Neo Geo MVS refresh rate?
But it works perfectly without errors on Fantasy Zone. Different arcade games have different refresh rates. Usually in RGB this does not matter.
Re: Neo Geo MVS refresh rate?
I've seen PCB's vary on their video output. I have to adjust all my monitors when I switch games. I know the Seibu SPI board(Raiden Righters, etc) has a funky hz, does not play well with all my cabs. Sounds like the MVS is messing with your setup...you could consolize it and get composite.
Head to Neo-Geo for your tech spec needs.
Edit: Opps, I forgot, you have a supergun doing the vdeo conversion. Sratch that idea. NG must be too powerful and awesome for being recorded
Does the AES do the same?
Side note: I appec Game Sack using real hardware and avoiding EMU for it's vids.

Re: Neo Geo MVS refresh rate?
The AES video works perfectly. Yes, real hardware whenever possible.
For example, instead of a solid flash when the shot gun is fired in Metal Slug X, I often get this when capturing video:

This will usually last only a few seconds before it gets mostly OK, then it goes back to this.

Re: Neo Geo MVS refresh rate?
That is crazy. Are there any video proccessing functions in your video capture card or software? I'me sure you messed with all that, NG is 20 some years old...it's not a Pokemon, can't catch(ure) them all

Re: Neo Geo MVS refresh rate?
Well the artifacting is happening in the capturing device. Obviously the MVS isn't drawing the screen that way, but what I assume is happening is that the capture device gets confused with the slightly different refresh rate. It looks mostly fine when played on a CRT SD TV. There are no settings for the capture device, it just converts analog video and audio into a MiniDV stream.
Re: Neo Geo MVS refresh rate?
It's a long shot, but have you tried to run the video through a VCR or even a receiver? I had and (shitty)modded 2600 that would not sync on a Sony (but fine on a other CRTs) that I ended up running through a VCR and it seemed to clean up the signal, or regulate it for lack of a better term. Does you TV have video out or are you using a pass-thru capture device?

Re: Neo Geo MVS refresh rate?
MVS vertical refresh rate is an odd 59.1856060~ Hz.
Re: Neo Geo MVS refresh rate?
I don't have any VCRs with s-video. All my Super VHS machines have died. I also don't have the MVS any more (it was never mine). Actually, come to think of it, I do still have a working Hi8 deck with s-video.
So it's actually slower than the AES (which is 59.94)? AES 4 LIFE BLAST PROCESSINGZ!MVS vertical refresh rate is an odd 59.1856060~ Hz.
