I went to a local used place (called Disc Replay in my area) and they just happened to have a Sega Genesis/Sega CD combo for only $35. I snatched it up immediately. When I got home and looked at it, it has two power cables, and one RF switch. My TV uses A/V cables, I was wondering what I should buy, and if both consoles use their own power/AV cords or not. I have the model 2 Genesis.
EDIT: Forgot Racketboy has a store, lol. Would I need two sets of AV Cables for the Genesis/Sega CD combo? I've never done anything with the Sega CD before, this is only my second time ever actually seeing one in real life (the first time being way back in the '90s when Toys R Us had them).

Re: Sega CD Questions
Should just need one A/V cable going from the genesis to the TV. IIRC, there is no need for a cable between a Genny 2 and the CD unit.

Re: Sega CD Questions
If it is a model 2 console, you can convert your RF cable into a composite cable pretty easy.

The images are gone but it is still overtly easy to do.

Re: Sega CD Questions
Thanks both of ya.
I don't trust myself to convert an RF Unit, so I think I'll just buy an A/V cable just to be safe.
Does it matter which system I hook the A/V up to to use them, the Genesis or the Sega CD unit?

Re: Sega CD Questions
You only need that cord if you want stereo sound from your Sega CD games, and you have a model 1 Genesis. The model 1 Genesis AV cables are mono-only, so you'll need the connector cord (basically a double-ended headphone cord) running between the two. The sound then comes out of the two sound jacks on the back of the SCD.Stark wrote:Should just need one A/V cable going from the genesis to the TV. Another way to accomplish stereo with a model 1 Genesis and an SCD is to buy a headphone jack to RCA cable, and so you run the sound to your TV from the headphone jack on the front of the model 1 Genesis. This is actually the superior solution, as it makes regular Genesis games stereo as well as SCD games, whereas the connector cable only gets you stereo for SCD stuff.

Re: Sega CD Questions
I'm just wanting to get the thing on so I can play games, lol. Since there's slots on both the unit and the genesis, wasn't sure if I need cords for both, and since you need power cords for both, wasn't sure if you needed video for both as well. My assumption is that I'd want to plug the cables into the Sega CD unit and not the Genesis to run them both, right?

Re: Sega CD Questions
No, the sega cd has no video output on its own. Run the video cables from the genesis, it'll display the CD stuff because the two are connected.
That said, when you first try it, make sure there's no cartridge in the Genesis, as if there is it will take priority over the CD.

No, plug the AV cords into the Genesis. Those ports on the back of the SCD are only needed for model 1 owners.KoLAddict wrote:I'm just wanting to get the thing on so I can play games, lol. Re: Sega CD Questions
Ok awesome thanks. Didn't know that. Always thought the Sega CD's were designed for the specific models of unit. Like Genesis model 1 could only use the first model Sega CD, and the Sega CD model 2 was only compatible with model 2 of the Genesis.
Y'all just saved me like $8 or $9, was going to buy two sets of cables tomorrow when I go back to DiscReplay to buy them.
EDIT: First post to my question initially actually told me to plug the A/V cords into the Genesis directly. Man I must be tired to have missed like half the sentence.

Re: Sega CD Questions
damn.
makes me glad I found a cdx. I barely have enough space for my other consoles let alone the multi plugs need for the sega CD/genesis/32X setup.
but it would be nice to experience the original setup.
post a pic when you're done with your setup, OP person
