Why did i do this. I'm horrible at these games and every girl is super animu.
I'm so confused. Where am I?
I'm not good at computers.
I decided to try and get into the Tohou fandom

Oh god, not Touhou fandom.
I'd rather play something where the bullets don't crawl towards you like little babies.
Plus, every character and boss is a little girl. In every game.

Well I guess since they're all witches/mikos/various other magical things, it doesn't seem a big deal that they're all girls.dunpeal2064 wrote:Oh god, not Touhou fandom.

Re: I decided to try and get into the Tohou fandom
I've been playing Touhou 6 off and on for about a year. I'm at the point where I can sometimes get to the last level on one credit, and sometimes get to the last boss on 3 credits. Someday I will 1cc this thing.
Yeah, so it's full of Loli's. Don't care, still a great game. The bullets are slow, but they make up for it in volume. The game is colorful, has great music and is just fun to play. I've found that practice really pays off in this game, so many other shmups I just hit a brick wall after a while. In Touhou 6 I can observe myself getting better over time, that's rewarding.

I have tried Touhou games because one of my friends is really big into the fandom... But never played the games.
The visuals are rather bland to me. The games are fairly enjoyable. Shmups in general are rather addicting. However, I definitely would rate them below games from a company like Cave or even other doujin shmups. Touhou is not bad, but I would much rather play console shmups or Trouble Witches, Exceed 3rd, Crimzon Clover, etc... the list goes on...

Re: I decided to try and get into the Tohou fandom
The actual levels and enemies just suck. The bosses are what its all about, but even then, most of the challenge is keeping track of the two little girls on the stage.
I can pretty much sleep my way through the first half of the game (on lunatic) and then I lose interest. The games are way too long.
I widely prefer something like Ketsui, which is hard on stage one, has an interesting level AND boss, a fantastic scoring system, and yet is only 5 levels long with 2 difficult-to-access 2nd loops
I would take any Cave, Raizing, Takumi, Psikyo, Seibu, etc any day.
But to each thier own.

Really? This is the biggest draw to me actually. I enjoy the visual experience of the bright colors and interlocking patterns. That's what's kept me playing when so many other games become unmotivating. Even better when I get in the zone and swap figure and ground. Gets a bit trippy.ZenErik wrote:The visuals are rather bland to me.

Hmm? I don't find the visuals that bright in the 3 or 4 Touhou games I have put some time into. When I think bright colors I think Sexy Parodius, Twinbee, Trouble Witches, Twinkle Star Sprites, and other cute em ups. Touhou is not really that bright or vibrant. Also not sure about Touhou being trippy. For trippy shooters I think Tetsuya Mizuguchi.Hatta wrote:Really? This is the biggest draw to me actually. Again, I do not find them to be awful shmups, but they just are not high up on my list. In my understanding, a lot of the Touhou fandom is not as much about the actual games as it is the fan art, fanfics, love for the characters, etc. I just don't really get fandoms of that sort. Maybe it's just me.

Don't know how anyone could find that visually unappealing.
Yeah, you're pretty spot on here. I can't argue that they're top tier shmups. But I will say for my part I don't care a bit for the characters or plot. They're just pretty games I have fun playing.Again, I do not find them to be awful shmups, but they just are not high up on my list.
