We have ordered the tool that will allow us to open the console. It should arrive this week. I asked the person on eBay and he said that the game played fine on his Japanese N64 but he didn't try it on an American version.

Since it doesn't play in the Passport I was hoping someone had experience playing it just in the console after the modification. I guess we'll find out this week.

To be sure the game works, swap the back off another U.S. cart say a cheap sports cart. You might find the cart fits better without the mod.

OK, will try when the tool comes this week and will post the results.

Thanks

Did you order both sizes? The carts are smaller screws.

I guess I'll just be modifying the console then, just ordered the one size. The shipping is the killer, tool insert is nothing. I don't want to pay shipping again.

My son was quite adament about not modifying the cartridge anyway. It sounds easy enough and I won't have to keep changing out the backs for any future carts he may buy.

If not too late, maybe you could change the order before shipped? The cart back is easy to switch and easily reversed. Also easier to clean the cart contacts when taken apart. But if multiple import carts then the N64 mod might be a better approach. I think it might not prove as reliable though, the import notches help to center the game cart.

Update: Success!!!
The tool arrived so we opened up the console and cut out the tabs with a Dremel; pretty easy. The Zelda Majora's Mask cartridge plays perfectly and so do the American carts. My son is a very happy camper and I won't have to modify any J-N64 carts he buys in the future.

Thanks, everyone, for the information and support.

I managed to boot some games that use the expansion pack without problems so that's unlikely to be the reason for Majora anf Perfect Dark not working.

The games I still can't boot are: Mickey's Speedway, Jet Force Gemini, Yoshi's Story, Donkey Kong 64, Majora's Mask. Have you tried any of them (other than Majora of course)?

The games I managed to boot are: Banjo Kazooie, Mario 64, Beetle Adventure Racing, Mario Kart, Goldeneye, International Superstar Soccer 2000, Ocarina of Time, Killer Instinct Gold, Extreme-G, Blast Corps, Kiddy Kong Racing, F1 Pole Position, Turok 2, Mario Tennis, Spacestation Silicone Valley, Lylat Wars, F-Zero x. A couple of these needed special boot codes.

Edit: managed to boot F-Zero and Lylat Wars
How did you get to boot ISS 2000? I managed once, but I have no clue how. And now I can't get it to run on my NTSC N64 anymore :/

Hateshinai wrote:I think I'm going to start a thread dedicated to listing boot codes for different games for the N64 Passport Plus 3. The information on the net is really scattered around and incomplete so I think it ill be good to gather them all in one place.
Did that ever get any progress? Working on a list myself now ^^

PS: Sorry to revive this old topic, but since it's perfectly on topic I hope it's ok!

That's what I did up to now. I will have to update it when I have some time, since I got some more games to test. There should be the ISS code in there too.
Mostly harmless
