KOTOR... I love this game!

Post by ChooChooBot »

I played Starwars Knights of The Old Republic when it came out back in the day when I was a kid. Me and a buddy would build an awesome fort made out of furniture, and then sneak the nicest TV in the house into the fort along with his xbox. We would play for hours and hours. I recently was looking in my game drawer and saw my own copy of the game. I popped in the game and it instantly brought back memories of me and my friend. The game is one of the finest RPG's I have ever played. Once I beat this one again I'm going to grab KOTOR2. I never really played that one much. Anyone know any other games that are similar to the KOTOR games?

This is laying out the absolute obvious, but have you simply looking into other Bioware developed games? Jade Empire was on the Xbox too and is pretty similar. The Mass Effect series is there new stuff as well. Unfortunately it's a tad streamlined compared to KOTOR (and especially their older games), but I still love the series. My biggest complaint is that it seemed easier to play Neutral in the KOTOR games whereas in Mass Effect, you're pretty much good or bad.

But yeah, still check those games out for sure.

Stay away from Dragon Age however!

KOTOR and the other BIOWARE games are on my backlog but, would you mind elaborating on Dragon Age?

It's natural that you would love KOTOR, as it's an awesome game. It's my favorite western RPG, and the first Xbox game I ever played. You should definitely buy KOTOR II, although it has sadly gotten kinda pricey for a best-selling Xbox game (like $25 used).

Ahhh Jade Empire was also a good game. Played that with my buddy as well. I gotta pick that one up now too. I never really got into Mass Effect. I will Probably end up just renting the Mass Effect games from my local Blockbuster and try them out again. I never touched a Dragon age game. They never looked appealing to me.

I played about 30 hours but then it was like suddenly slamming my face into a wall of bricks. The storyline and each and every character was as flat, generic, and boring as it could get. Topped off with the setting, it was just unimaginative to the core. I also played the game on the 360 unfortunately and I'm no graphics whore, but I've seen better looking PS2 games. I wish I were kidding or exaggerating but I'm not. I did watch a friend play it on the PC once and it looked better, but not by much.

The KOTOR games and Mass Effect I absolutely loved playing to full completion, did everything there was to do in these games. Jade Empire I only played a chunk of since I rented it back in the day, but I really enjoyed what I played of that one too and can't wait to get it again.

But yeah, simply put Dragon Age was just Fantasy 101 and the characters were mindblowingly boring/forgettable.

I will also never forget when I bought the game off Gamefly for real cheap, they sent a voucher for one of the DLC's as well. So I got it for free, but boy am I glad I didn't pay for any of that and feel sorry for those who did. I believe it took like 30 minutes to complete the DLC I got. I guess that's nothing new though.

The writing might have had something to do with it as well. It's awkward to say I did actually enjoy Alpha Protocol (as broken and goofy as the game was, the writing was amazing), and it's probably worth noting the main writer is part of the same team (Obsidian) that worked on KOTOR 2 and Fallout New Vegas, both of which I really enjoyed a lot (when I hated Fallout 3 as well. So I'd say Obsidian do some good homeruns for me).

The first Dragon Age was pretty good I think.

Graphics could definitely have been better, and there are always things to nitpick...but some of the issues stem from the flexibility of the game, which is more akin to older Bioware games. Arguably, it was more ambitious as a role playing game. Had they pushed more in that direction instead of trying to turn DAII into Mass Effect with swords...

The world they created isn't bad either. High fantasy is what it is, gritty as they try to make it these days. As a new IP to use instead of the D&D license I thought it was a fairly good start. Maybe not as different as Jade Empire in the landscape of RPG settings, but remember, it was supposed to be a return to form for their epic fantasy games on the PC. Then it had to be on consoles too :/

Just beat KOTOR! Man what a game. I enjoyed every second of my play through. I bought a new copy of Jade Empire on Ebay for $5. I'm looking to buy KOTOR 2 but Ebay is pretty expensive.

Just to show how much opinions on these vary, I'll say that I liked Dragon Age, absolutely loved 2, and thought Mass Effect was the worst of the Bioware games to date (ME2 is Excellent though).

Dragon Age 2 fleshes out the generic fantasy world a lot more, and brings the Qunari into the spotlight. I also liked how they shook around the standard Bioware formula (start in town doomed to be destroyed by nebulous huge evil, go to four towns to gather party and plot items, go to central area and win game) by having everything in one town, and stretched out over a long period of time. Also, Silly-Hawke is my answer to being forced to be either a saint or a demon every game.
