Super Nintendo Questions???

Post by Dakinggamer87 »

Hi,
My question is why do SNES systems become yellow I have been told its due to aging and by some the material used in the plastic and only certain models are affected.

If anyone, can clear this up for me would be greatly appreciated.. I have been looking on ebay for a 2nd SNES and see tons and tons of ugly yellow SNES units and its kinda discouraging...

-Thanks

Also, any other systems that change color such as SNES????

super famicom and dreamcast do it.

it's the flame retardant plastic that the fcc or something told them to make the snes' wth. it's just the chemicals reacting to age.

White Dreamcasts, N64 carts and the good ol NES are prone to this as well.

Check out this thread for more info! There is a nice article someone posted a link to on that topic specifically.

It's all about the plastic they used and a combination of sun and heat exposure. Read the article, it's really good.

Thanks for everybody's replies I also found that Digital Press said it was because Nintendo was cheap and used a crappy plastic, and switched out later in the system’s lifetime. Glad I know better now!

SNES Yellowed Shell

Post by corn619 »

I'm pretty sure they sell new SNES shells on ebay or import sites, maybe someone even sells custom shells. I will look into it. You could even take the the existing shell off and do a custom paint job. Just imagine a custom black glossy SNES!

The smaller SNES model 2 does not have this problem. Take a look on ebay or a local store. If it ain't yellow by now, it won't be ever (usually).

I actually just got 2 Super Famicoms this last week; one that is perfectly gray how it's supposed to be and the other one is super cancerous yellow on the light gray area with the dark gray, buttons, and port cover normal. I noticed the normal one was made in China, certainly a later model, and the yellow one is heavier and made in Japan (probably 1st run or so).
I'm thing about taking it apart and and spraying it with acrylic black or blue spray paint. Then again, the yellow color is so consistant all over, I might just leave it as is and find another one to spray.

If you're really worried about it losing the gray color and you're interested in modding the SNES, might I suggest purchasing a cheaper, yellowed model so you can experiment with it instead of doing things with your SNES that's the original color.

I've been thinking about doing this lately, buying a cheap yellow model that I can paint and mod a bit. I need an "import-ready" SNES.
