What game got you into shmups?

My first shmup that I liked was Tiger Heli in a 3rd party plug and play. Then when I got a snes, my uncle got me Gradius III because he said he played it when he was my age. Finally, I bought my first shmup when I bought Ikaruga.

Castel Shikigami 2 really blew my mind, and was only the 3rd shmup I had ever played. That made me interested in Gradius V. After those 2, I was a full-blown addict

Axelay for SNES was the first shmup I owned. Followed by Einhander later on for PSX. Now I can't get enough shooters lately for some reason. Just finally beat Jamestown the other day lol

Same. I have fond memories of challenging my father for high scores after school. He was actually pretty decent.

The 1995 Galaga Arrangement on the first Namco Musuem PS2 game. That game is in my all time Top 5.

I don't like shmups, I just suck at them.

I tried KOF on the PSP and there is just too much shit going on, I also picked up Platypus for the PSP, its not overtly enjoyable (as its fairly 'basic' in terms of gameplay) but as I can actually tell whats going on, without the whole screen being bullets, its more enjoyable than most other shmups i play.

Answer the question, I am not into them.

I first enjoyed Space Invaders on the TI-99/4a as a little guy (well, TI Invaders I guess it was called). Then I really loved River Raid on the 2600. Probably the game that really got me loving them was Life Force on the NES. Since that game, I've always made sure I had a shooter or two on every system I've had. I also enjoyed playing games like Galaga, Galaxian, Centipede, R-Type, Saint Dragon, Raiden, etc., in the arcades whenever I had a chance.

I remembering passing up to play Ms. Pac, Frogger and Galaga at the arcade to get a few quarters in Super Cobra. That would have to my first shooter.
