What are the best arcade trackball games?

Post by dsheinem »

I am spinning this thread out of my other "Best unported Arcade games" thread as I think it deserves more attention :)

What are the best trackball games? Dial/Spinner/Light Gun/Racing wheel/etc. games that can be used with a trackball don't count...just looking for games that had cabinets featuring a trackball!

Suggested so far:

Atari Football
Atari Force Liberator
Cabal
Centipede
Combat School
Crystal Castles
Golden Tee Series
Marble Madness
Millipede
Missle Command
Peggle (not PopCap)
Rampart
Reactor
Quantum
SegaSonic
Shuuz
Track & Field (trackball variant)
World Class Bowling series

Good call spinning this off from your other thread. I already mentioned my favorites there.

Since you and I agree on Missile Command, I'll also recommend Missile Command's evil arch-nemesis: Atari Force Liberator. Instead of saving cities from a missile barrage, Liberator tasks the player with firing missiles at a planet. This arcade cabinet is pretty darn rare, so it's a good candidate for MAME. Given it's age, it should be completely emulate-able.

Crystal Caves? All I can find is a DOS Apogee game named that - was it an arcade cab? More info?

Marble Madness and Crystal Castles are also popular trackball games.

From my Spinner Mod Thread, PUZZ LOOP has been ported, but an interesting bit of info. Strange about how all the Zuma games took off, inspired by this early Arcade game. Works fine with a Mouse or Trakball.

Emulation is not always a bad thing. Sometimes custom controls can be utilized. Not a surprise here right? Custom controls are a taken for granted option in Mame. But actually this one is a Hidden Discovery thru the TAB menu. I couldn't get my mouse to work in this game, even though Mame had the option.

Imagine my surprise when I went to the in game Service Menu.

The Arcade game Puzz Loop is a Stick type game. Hidden inside the Dip Switch Service Menu allows for a Knob Controller. The Mouse or a custom Spinner can be utilized! The Arcade I played had a stick, Spinner versions I didn't know about until I discovered this with the wonders of Mame Emulation.

Perhaps there are other "Hidden Gems Controls" waiting to be discovered.

Tac Scan is also worth looking into, a very good bottom and sometimes from behind shooter. The only home release is an unlockable on PS2 Genesis Collection. Also Reactor which only saw a 2600 release. I love just feeding a quarter for the guitar rift. :D

Tac/Scan used a spinner though, not a trackball.

Cabal
Combat School

Apparently a prototype Quake arcade cab was developed.

But anyway, go here and choose in control panel layout.

Mentioned at the beginning of my last Reply. In case one does not have a Spinner on their Arcade Panel. All the Spinner games work with a Trakball or Mouse. I play the PS2 version of Tac Scan with a Smartjoy Frag and my Spinner Mod, sometimes with a Logitech Trakball. For Mame Tac Scan on the Mac and PC, a Macally Trakball.
