Since I am diving into MAME now, I am looking for opinions about the best MAME-compatible arcade games that have never been ported to a console that use a joystick and buttons for input (as opposed to a flight stick, dial/spinner controller, wheel, yoke, light gun, etc.). I feel like I am pretty familiar with most console arcade ports, but not so much with those that haven't ever appeared on a home system.
Oh, and I guess I'd be happy to hear your opinions of the best trackball games too - post them here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=32614

ok, maybe I'll get this started myself:
Here's a few that I've played/enjoyed so far that, as far as I know, have no home console port:
Alien vs Predator
ESP.Ra.De.
Strikers 1945 III
Wizard of Fire
Dangun Feveron
G.I. Joe (holy shit there's a fun GI Joe game!?)

Avengers: Galactic Storm
Capcom Sports Club
Shock Troopers: 2nd Squad
X-Men
Spider-man: The Videogame
Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder
Osman
Dead Connection
I'm not really 100% sure these games haven't been ported to other systems, though. At least, I know that they're not in any of the recent consoles by the big 4 (dunno about VC or Live).

well there were a ton of games released on various consoles with that name, not sure if any of them might've been a port of this

dsheinem played the cps2 one, it's a sidescrolling beat em up where you either use the marines or the predators to fight aliens. I don't remember it being ported to home consoles either (or maybe it's on the saturn? Most cps2 games got ported to that console.)
I'd also add WWF Wrestlefest, but I remember that it wasn't really a fun game (I hate games that rely on button mashing). But it's very nostalgic for me and looked really good.

Good call on Golden Axe: Death Adder. Is it emulated perfectly these days?

Nope, it is probably Capcom's best beat-em-up ever, and it never saw a home port.

I just checked. There's still a notice about video emulation not being 100% accurate, but I don't see any noticeable glitches (probably something very minor and not gamebreaking).

Re: What are the best unported joystick and button arcade games?
The arcade version of Battletoads springs to mind. This is an entirely different game than the one released to home consoles. There's lots of over-the-top violence.
Trackball games are among my favorite genre; I'm so glad you asked this question, dsh.
For "modern" trackball games, I highly reccomend SegaSonic; it's the only sonic game to remain arcade exclusive. Golden Tee is a fun golf game that makes good use of the trackball; this is one of the most popular "modern" arcade games. Simpsons Bowling is not the most realistic bowling game, but it always brings a smile to my face.
For more classic trackball games, Try out centipede and it's sequel millipede; both are quarter-munching kings and have been ported to every console under the sun.
In my opinion the absolute masterpiece of classic trackball games is Missile Command. This game has been ported many times, but remains a haunting piece of cold war terror.

I always enjoyed Crystal Castles in the arcade.

I had Missile Command and Golden Tee on my list, Simpsons Bowling wouldn't boot up for me the other day

I'll be sure to check out the Sonic game. Can you believe that I have sunk many hours into Centipede using...a 7800 controller!?
I think I am going to spin out a separate thread for discussion of trackball games...
