80's nostalgia and the inevitable impending 90's nostalgia

Post by BoringSupreez »

In recent years, 80's nostalgia has become mainstream. I see people walking around in public wearing Atari, Sesame Street, and 80's era soda logo t-shirts. Popular 80's cartoons have been getting reboots/movies, ala MLP, The Smurfs, Captain Planet (soon), and Alvin and the Chipmunks (I know the chipmunks weren't created in the 80's, but that was when they were most popular.) The NES and Atari 2600 are experiencing a second popularity as well.

Now, most of that stuff I'm fine with, except for the movies. They have been horrible, IMO. Alvin and the Chipmunks was one of the worst excuses for a kid's movie I've ever seen! The Smurf's one was just as bad, and there's no reason to assume that it's going to get any better with future movies. So I'm thinking: sometime this decade, probably later on, like 2017, 80's nostalgia will have played itself out, and the 90's equivalent will appear. And then my childhood will be destroyed, as we start getting stuff like a Pinky and the Brain movie, with the mice being CGI in a live-action world, complete with licensed pop music. Anyone else dreading 90's nostalgia?

Already happening. They're replaying all the 90s stuff on Nickelodean. A lot of my friends are watching that stuff. I liked some of it when I was younger, but I don't really watch TV on TV outside of the occasional sports event anymore.

I must admit I'm guilty of having 90's nostalgia, I love Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Cow And Chicken, Hey Arnold, Ahhh! Real Monsters, Rugrats (Which happens to have a fantastic movie: Rugrats In Paris) and Rocko's Modern Life and I still watch those shows. Those were the good times.

Eventually everything gets recycled.

What's going to be interesting about the hip cool young kids re-discovering 90's culture will be to see if they only adopt the stuff that was completely mainstream or if they will adopt shit that wasn't at the fore front of cultural awareness.

Kids walking around in vintage Playstation 1 shirts is a given. Kids walking around in black shirts with a blue US Sega Saturn logo would be a riot.

And certainly in some coffee shop somewhere, some hipster will put together an entire wardrobe / art exhibit about old Atari Jaguar advertisements.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

It's been happening for some time now, you just didn't notice.

When we were 10 years old, we had no worries about anything! We were practically given everything we wanted.

All you twenty somethings out there are reminiscing about your youth!

Why are SNES's worth more right now than ever before?

NOSTALGIA! thats why!

The same thing's gonna happen in a few years when The PLAYSTATION generation reach that age, and they are remembering their times with sony's first console!

The same is going to happen in another decade or so when the kids who played their first console GAMECUBE will want to play it again.

I'll declare CIVILIZATION to be over when this gets remade!

I'm still waiting for a Jem and the Holograms live action movie. I bet it's going to be truly outrageous.

Saved by the Bell turned into a movie.

I know it technically started in the 80s but that show is synonymous with 90s for me. Same thing with Roseanne.
