What game got you into shmups?

For me, it was Xevious on a Namco Collection Plug-and-Play that a friend of mine had. I'd sleep over at his house often-times, and started the habit of waking up the next morning to play the living crap out of Xevious. They always made pancakes whenever someone slept over. They were goood. The friend got extraordinarily surprised when 5th grade me beat the final boss, only to find that there was more game.

So yeah, those are the two things that got me into shmups. Pancakes and Xevious.

Now I play crazy Japanese shmups for the Saturn and Dreamcast.

While Galaga was the first shmup I really liked, it's not what really brought me into the shmup genre. That honor goes to Abadox.

1942 on a NES pirate cart that my uncle gave me. Also on that same cart was B-Wings which was another of my favourites. Loved how the powerups actually fit onto your ship and in order to change you had to destroy your current accessory. Big change from what has become the norm of picking up "P"s and such and your guns just getting better magically.

I remember playing Raptor: Call of the Shadows on a compilation disc that I had for the PC a long time ago. I really enjoyed it but I didn't get hooked on the genre. That would come later when I got my modded Saturn and I tried out Radiant Silvergun and DoDonPachi. Now I'm watching eBay like a hawk for a bunch of those classic shmups that I never realized were so awesome.

What got me to figure out what a shmup was as a genre and discover the communities was Ikaruga...

The first one I ever played was a dos clone of Space Invaders, I played a lot of various pc games (Raptor, Major Stryker etc). But didn't really get seriously into them till a friend got a Dreamcast and we started playing Mars Matrix, Gunbird, and Zero Wing 2 together.
