Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Pre-ordered on Amazon. I have a novel idea for those who aren't interested in the topic...don't read it!

Mmm I love me some GTA. All you bashers (read retro snobs and anti-bandwagoneers) need to try some 2D GTA... I have GTA 1 on PS and 2 on PC and they are both sweet, however I still think GTAIII brought a revolution to the series. As for GTAIV, I definitely want to pick it up but will wait for the PC version because mouse and keyboard controls are better (let the flaming begin!).

As for San Andreas being like Vice City and GTAIII... I think you need to go back and play the game again because it is different. I mean you can't even swim until San Andreas, let alone all the RPG-type features they added, girlfriends (hot coffee anyone!?), extensive use of airplanes. Rockstar has great script-writing ability and has captured me since GTA 1 and I really don't think that was the blockbuster game that the series is today. I'm not a huge fan of 'the man' and eating all the shit that publishers and developers feed me, however I believe that Rockstar is better than most and puts lots of value into their games(today you can get San Andreas at Wal-Mart for $10; Starcraft battlechest is still $20 for God's sake).

I still feel that Grand Theft Auto 2 on the PC is the best. Playing six player lan games on custom deathmatch maps is something simply striking, and for some reason they took it out with Grand Theft Auto 3. Now they are putting it back in and people think it is revolutionary, I find this humorous.

With 4 they will have to make some major changes to make the game worthwhile to me. Vice City had an awesome soundtrack and San Andreas was very large, but I found the console versions to be very poor. The PC version allowed some corrections, but even with those they never reached what the second one provided in terms of gameplay. I will admit I did put many hours in all three not just to play the storyline but to do what I think the majority of people who bought the game bought it for, mindless mayhem. But they did not have the lasting appeal that the second still has to me. I will just have to wait and see with this one.

Not true. I'm like 70% modern, 30% retro anymore. And I also preferred 1 and 2 over the later entries. I just don't like what the series stands for now. It's all shock value and no gameplay. I think it made a terrible jump to 3D and has never recovered from it. Yes, these games let you do everything, but the ways in which you do everything have been done so much better in countless other games.

I've pre-ordered. Ok, maybe GTA doesn't have a perfect 'formula'. But its undeniably damn fun. And of course the multiplayer will be an awesome twist.

I am a bit disappointed there is no way to play co-op through the whole story though.

I think what these guys are hinting at is that this kind of topic is frowned upon in this forum. It IS a RETRO site after all. Yeah, I am being an ass. And yeah, I am being a hypocrite for replying to the post and for posting things about MGS4. Sue me.
HAHA!

I think Mercenaries is better anyway. The second one should be great with co-op.

GTA and Mercenaries are about the only ones of this style of play that I've really ever enjoyed, GTA for its satiric nature, Mercenaries because I thought the idea of doing this in a war zone was entertaining. Between the two, I suppose the GTA series ultimately offered more to do, but it tended to get tedious. Mercenaries removed a lot of the annoying tasks from GTA, so I liked it more.

I've only played the first one of the PC and #2 on the Dreamcast.
