Kinda a backward step, but some TVs treat Composite and S-Video differently. Putting a S-Video to Composite adapter on the cable might give you a 3D or 4-line comb filter that isn't used on the S-Video input which would reduce the dithering effect in trade for some different artifacts.

Wow, thanks for all of the informative answers everyone. I'm going to bounce between composite and S-Video for a few days or weeks and see which I prefer. I have a pretty large Saturn collection, so I haven't played all of my games on S-Video yet. So far, I think composite actually looks better than S-Video. More playtesting is needed...

I just recently switched to s-video as well. Its a mixed bag about which games look better, and which games look worse, but I found a simple solution that worked out really well for me. Many LCD TV's (especially VIZIO's) allow you to adjust the sharpness of the picture. If you reduce the sharpness a slight fuzzyness, similar to that of the composite cable is introduced. So I adjust the sharpness with the remote on a per-game basis untill I like the way it looks. Cable switching is way to annoying.

I recently got a Saturn S-Video cable and noticed this as well. IMO, the vastly sharper image far outweighs the mildly annoying loss of these transparencies.

You shouldn't have the sharpness up high to begin with. It creates the appearance of a high resolution picture without actually doing so.

I am pretty sure that Shining Force III had actual transparencies. It's been awhile, but I remember reading that this was done by tasking the sound chip to do the work.
