I don't know when exactly this year I beat these, or in what order, but here's what I remember:

Max Payne (PC)
Killzone 2 (PS3)
The Sly Collection (PS3)
Call of Duty: World at War (PS3)
Rayman 2 (DC)
Sonic CD (SCD)
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Genesis)
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (PSP)
Crash Bandicoot 2 (PS1)

I just beat Crash Bandicoot 2 less than 10 minutes ago. I thought it was a great 3D platformer for the PS1, and so far, the best one I've played. I'll be moving on to Crash Bandicoot: Warped shortly.

altered beast: a game about altering into beasts. is the game great? fuck no. is the game bad? not even close. it's just one of those games that does nothing well, but still is able to deliver the fun. and i attribute that to its very short length. if the game was one level longer it would have overstayed its welcome and wouldn't nearly have been enjoyable. it took me probably 2 days of playing if off and on before finally being able to complete the game. and after you beat it it pulls a ghost n goblins and puts you at the first level again with more enemies.
if you took a shit, please put it back

MechAssult for XBox

Image

Great game. It doesn't have the prettiest graphics in it's generation, but everything else about it was a blast. Lots of things to blow-up and destructible environment feeds you lust for wanton violence quite well. It's very satisfying to take out an enemy base in this game. And the pacing is just right for this type of game.

Not only is it fun, but as the game progresses it gets pretty dang challenging.

You also get an assortment of mechs to choose from. They are added to your selection as you progress.

My only complaint (other than the graphics, which aren't that big of an eyesore and still work), is the ending. The game does have a lot of areas to tromp through, but at the end of it all you get a very short movie that is very lackluster.

I highly recommend this one to fans of games like MechWarrior and Armored Core, as long as you aren't a graphics snob.

Thoughts on the Game(s)

Another game in my Half Life binge completed, I enjoyed it even though it did not really add anything new to the originals experience. A lot of people complained that the game was too short, which it was, however to me I felt if it was longer I most likely would have got bored with it.

OH YEAH! WHOOHOOOOO! YEAH!

Sorry! It just feels awesome... awesome to finally go back to a game for a third time, and actually finish it this time (this seriously goes back like 10 years in which I got to the FINAL dungeon but never beat it, glad to get this off my chest!). Heck yeah! And low and behold, this might have been the best FF experience of the year for me... and quite possibly a new favorite! A top favorite? Hard to say, upon my first playthrough of this game on the shoddy PSX port, I really didn't enjoy it that much at all. I'm not sure why! Maybe it was too hard or I didn't like the job system, or I was burned out on JRPG's at the time, and well the crappy translation of that version probably didn't help at all either. But a third times a charm on this game and I spent about 32 hours into it, 10 more than my playthroughs for FFII and FFIV there, and I definitely had a lot more fun playing this game than those! I'd be hard pressed to say it's better than FFIV... but who knows, the gameplay was absolutely gold here and I think it really says something when I just beat two other FF's back to back before this, and it still blew me away and was a blast. I was not tired or burned out at all playing this game directly after two other FF's.

I can now potentially see this being one of the most replayable Final Fantasy's for me from here on and comparable to a Seiken Densetsu 3 level. There are just so many different ways I could have played through this with the jobs and whatnot, so the customization and flexibility was really amazing and hit a soft spot for me. I've noticed maxing out the battle speed in old FF's makes them a lot more fun too, hah.

People say FFV's story is pretty passable but you know what, that was probably without a doubt the best and most rewarding FF ending I've seen next to FFIV's. Not to mention just like FFIV, I thought the game had great pacing and never let up. I love the third world, things were on edge but the narrative didn't completely whither away like it kind of does in the WoR in FFVI (I've been jokingly thinking this lately, but it's like the heroes of FFVI -failed- to save the world... haha). So much like FFIV, I thought the game story and pacing wise, was extremely consistent from the start and to the end. And while the game is a bit more childish than it's brethren, the atmosphere was incredibly powerful and said enough. I kind of compare it to Secret of Mana in that regard now, which also has a very basic childish kind of tale, but the experience and atmosphere makes it a grand journey. I really got that vibe from FFV here.

Not to mention Uematsu's music in this game felt... different. It's hard to grasp what's so different about this one, but it certainly did seem a bit more experimental. When it worked as it usually did, it was epic. I love that the music, the graphics, and the story all had that classic vibe to it, unlike FFVI and the later games that followed. It's not to further bash FFVI like I sound like I am here, but yeah, FFIV and FFV definitely have more of an old school edge to them I'd say.

Not to mention the superior GBA translation made this so much better, it was crazy. The tongue in cheek humor just made me fall in love with the cast, and the stuff with Galuf was probably the most intense stuff I've seen in an FF now that I think about it. When the awesome credits were rolling and Uematsu's ethereal music was playing in the background ... it was like a hit in the gut like, "man... I gotta leave these characters now? It's been a blast!" And well, the farewell ending was oh so satisfying.

ExDeath himself I fell in love with, honestly. I thought he was an awesome villain. Hilariously awesome, but he was no pushover in the grand scheme of things. While he was no match for my setup at the end of the game, the battle with him at the top of his castle still remains as probably one of the single hardest FF boss battles ever. You just gotta love how that feels like it could have been the final dungeon and final fight... but nope!

And speaking of final dungeon, whoa. The Void was incredible. I absolutely loved the idea for it and everything. The music was perfect too, it couldn't top FFIV's final dungeon theme, but it was good enough.

So anyways yeah, FFV... damn good stuff. Holy crap, that was fun and totally worth the ride. Like the FFII and FFIV extras, I'm not sure if I'll hit up the Sealed Dungeon here or at least right now ... lol. Sounds extremely time consuming. That said, I got the new jobs so I might mess around with them, and I could not beat Shinryu at The Void (supposedly harder than ExDeath?), so maybe I'll try and beat him and call it good. Who knows. Maybe tomorrow I'll be craving more FFV, heh.

Metroid Prime 3 - I haven't played this game since it first came out four years ago. Back then it was touted as a real reason to own a Wii. You know what? I think that holds true.

This game does so much right - the music, the level design, the controls, the storyline, the art direction; literally everything works so damn well. Probably one of the best Ridley fights in the entire series, to boot. It also closed out the Prime trilogy in an extremely satisfying way, tying off the entire Phazon story without disturbing its place in the canon between Zero Mission and the Return of Samus - which is impressive since that'd be an easy part of the story to mess up!

An all around great game.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

13- Advanced Dungeons & Dragons- Intellivision

After hearing of the Crown of Kings, an ancient treasure guarded by the most foul of dragons, I set out with three adventurers. After traversing the plains I made it to the mountains. Armed with only my wits and a quiver full of arrows, I entered into a dark system of caves. I slew giant snake and demon alike.

I made it through those caverns and traveled across river and stream; forest and wood until I made it to the gates which opened the way to the Cloudy Mountain. Turning the key I felt a rush of excitement. The gate swung clear and I proceeded up the path to that forbidden peak.

My band of warriors entered that final cave. The crown was within my grasp when they appeared. Two great winged beasts whose size would make a lavish castle look like a mere anthill. One dragon struck down one of my warriors. His body was hewn against the wall. I took the shot and hit the dragon in the eye. The body of the fell beast shuddered and gave out a final cry before collapsing on the cave floor.

The death of my companion was to be in vain unless I could make it out of the mountain alive. With my final arrow drawn I aimed at the last foe. The arrow flew through the air and pierced a spot between the lizard's scales. The dragon was no more.

I walked to the end of the cavern and amongst the broken swords and empty scabbards was the treasure I sought. The Crown of Kings. A crown of pure gold with all the richest gems from the ancient mines. I left that Cloudy Mountain and turned on the path home.

My quest was over.
