Is "Limited Edition" really Limited???
I have noticed that there is a common trend going around. Many new games are being released with Limited Edition, Special Edition, Collector's Edition, etc. First of all, is there really a difference among these different versions, i.e. LE, SE, CE??? If everything is being released as limited or special, then wouldn't it stop being special or limited??? Is it even worthwhile to pay the extra dough for these versions??? Some are great, like MGS3: Subsistence LE, and some are not, FF XII Collector's Edition. I guess Limited Edition is worthwhile if it is really limited, but I am tired of paying extra for something that should have been included in the normal version in the first place. What do you guy think?

I think it's just a way for publishers to make more money off you. Many have pretty much said that the high sales rates of $60 SE games last gen was a big factor in deciding they could go ahead and charge $60 as a baseline price for PS3 and 360 games.
I guess if you're a big fan and there are true extras it's worthy it. But I can't see that many of them are truly "limited." They're still mass produced consumer products.

I think thats the kicker. The special or collectors editions aren't usually rare, but they have all the extras. It's the same thing they do with movies and cd's why not do it with games.RadarScope1 wrote: I think it's just a way for publishers to make more money off you. There are some companies like ATLUS and Working Designs(RIP) that do make limited quanity runs of games. Limited can be decieving, it usually means they make one print run only and thats it. But if they made less copies than God of War or Final Fantasy X, some companies still might claim it's a "limited" release.
I'm pretty sure they do it to make extra money, but it works most of the time. Many of their titles hold thier value quite well. I picked up Persona 3 at gamestop brand new for 50 bucks because it was already going for $80 on ebay.
Special edition is a term that I'm okay with if it comes with cool bonuses and preorder goodies, but I never do that. I think I heard gta4 was $100 for the SE. I mean, a $60 game already is too expensive for me, but it did sound like it had some neat add-ins. Metal lockbox anyone?
Consoles:GB, Virtual Boy, NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Sega Genesis+32x, Sega Saturn, Sega Sports Dreamcast, PS2+HDD+HD Advance, Xbox, XBOX 360

Nearly everything ATLUS prints is a limited release, (un)fortunately. Most other companies release as many as customers are willing to preorder, and then some. Usually, the "making of" bonus DVD goes untouched and the company pockets $10 more for less than a dollar's worth of product.ott0bot wrote:I think thats the kicker. I will sadly admit that I bought the limited release of Ninja Gaiden Sigma, only to find that all I got was a cardboard box holding a "making of" DVD and an unchanged copy of the regular NGS. That was the most blatant cash in I ever fell for - most other limited or special releases have the decency to come in a steel case or something. At least I can run those over with my car and still have a working copy of the game inside.
too bad it's getting re-released tomorrow.ott0bot wrote:There are some companies like ATLUS and Working Designs(RIP) that do make limited quanity runs of games. But that is Persona 3: Fes. They may have the game re-release, but the Limited Edition is the Art Book, the soundtrack, and a cardboard box for the original.vlame wrote:too bad it's getting re-released tomorrow.ott0bot wrote:There are some companies like ATLUS and Working Designs(RIP) that do make limited quanity runs of games. I haven't even been paying attention! I heard fes had some additional dialoge changes and some extra quests. Oh well.peace4myheart wrote:But that is Persona 3: Fes.
