Re: Mystical Ninja Starring Gomon Review N64
Wow mate, you did a great job! I know I've been somewhat harsh on your reviews in the past but it's clear how much effort you put into this review. Despite the naysayers, hard work and effort doesn't go unnoticed. As long as you keep up this level of quality I really look forward to your future reviews.
I have strong feelings about Goemon 64 myself and it was nice to see someone bother to review it. I've heard it described as "Zelda 64 before there was Zelda 64" and I think that's in many ways what Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon was. I have a few gripes about it that you didn't mention.
My biggest problems other than the early 3D camera without manual control are the fact that you get lost quite often and aren't given clear goals on what to do or where to go next. Add to that the lack of a cartridge based save (you need the rarely used N64 memory card) and the fact that the game sometimes becomes overly ambitious and has bouts of slowdown.
I quite agree with you that the music is incredible and I'll add that Big Impact is so awesome its reason to play the game alone.
Even though I've owned the game since the late 90s, I've never really played it beyond the first two dungeons. It's always been a second-choice to its superior sidescrolling sequel on the N64 and of course the Super Famicom exclusives. If you like Goemon, check out both Goemon 2 and 3 on the Super Famicom.
Just be aware that the games are region locked, so you'll need to either import a US SNES and remove the tabs or import a Japanese Famicom if you want to play them in the UK.
To show my support for Goemon games in the west, here's two beadsprites I made of the main characters. I love Goemon. Such a great series with great import titles that are mostly platformers!

i have been absolutely in love with this game since i was young. Probably one of the first pieces of Japanese quirkiness i got as a kid and a great game to get introduced to that kind of humor....and the game is great to boot. Loved your review.
