Watchmen
Overall, I thought it was a very nice adaptation of its source material. The costume and set designs were remarkably faithful, and the script would often take not just lines, but sometimes entire monologues and conversations straight from the comic. I liked that.
The casting was all around pretty great too. I absolutely loved the casting for Rorshach, The Comedian, Dr. Manhattan, and Dan Dreiberg were all pretty much perfect. I was less thrilled with the choices for Veidt and Laurie Jupiter.
I have issues though with some of Zack Snyder's directing choices. I wasn't a fan of the ultra-stylized fight scenes and they way they seemed to over-emphasize some of the rather brutal violence. Watchmen's a pretty violent and gritty comic as it is, and I wouldn't want them to tone it down, but I feel that we don't need to see slow motion bloody arm breaks, etc.
I also didn't care too much for the music. The songs would often seem really out of place and make everything feel awfully hokey. Plus it ends with a My Chemical Romance cover of a Bob Dylan song.
I have a lot of minor issues with some of the story changes (some less minor than others) but I won't get into those. I will mention this though: Veidt's Lynx. In the film it's just there, totally out of nowhere with no explanation, and completely fake looking to boot. In the comic, it's explained that the Lynx is a product of genetic-engineering, which helps set up some stuff that isn't in the movie anyhow. Why leave the Lynx in?
I watched the Director's Cut by the way. I know there's a longer cut out there, but aside from being rather pricey to get ahold of, I figure the director's cut's 3 hour runtime is more than long enough already.
I could just say "The Book is Better" but eh. Watchmen was long considered to be unfilmable, so really it's kind of an accomplishment that this movie even ended up being made at all, much less turning out as good as it did. I mean let's face it, we could've gotten something far, far worse.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Watchmen should've been a made-for-TV miniseries for a premium movie channel, a la Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Basically, 60-minute episodes where each episode is based on a different issue.
Same with Scott Pilgrim.
Recently watched the so-called Tripping the Rift "movie", which is nothing more than four episodes stitched together with a small amount of new footage, like old Looney Toon movies from the '80s. It's based mostly on the episode where Chode was targeted by a Terminator-esque clown robot. Skip it and just watch the show.

Not bad, but not really that great either. Just meh.
"because it's dull, you twit - it'll hurt more!"
For me it seemed like Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves had high production value, great actors, and great costumes and sets; but it was all wasted. The story just wasn't all that compelling and the action was definetly lacking.

Oh, yeah! I originally thought about the possibility of an animated made-for-TV adaptation of ASoUE.BoringSupreez wrote: And A Series of Unfortunate Events as well.
And this other book series, Sweep.

That certainly would've been ideal. Oh well I suppose.REPO Man wrote:Watchmen should've been a made-for-TV miniseries for a premium movie channel, a la Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Basically, 60-minute episodes where each episode is based on a different issue.
I've heard there's talked to adapt The Sandman into a tv series. That might prove interesting...

I personally prefer the way the book handled the ending, but eh. That's a very arguable point.vlame wrote: the ending was better. looking back the bone breaks really reminded me of batman:arkham asylum.
I wonder how I might've felt about the Watcmen film if I'd not read the book first.

I did not know that. Thanks for the heads up.noiseredux wrote:both of them...OldSchool_Boy wrote: Also have to add that the soundtrack by Rza is great as well
the soundtrack is great, with all the Wu-affiliates, but the actual score which was Japan-only I believe is amazing.
