Yeah, the cable in the Xbox is an ATA33 cable, which makes sense because the hard drive wasn't intended to store much besides saved games. No need for speed. The IDE controller does ATA100, because that's what nVidia made at the time. So obviously the speed is limited by the cable. Putting an ATA100 cable on it will allow the Xbox to transfer at the maximum speed it supports.

An ATA133 cable will also work, but you shouldn't expect any improvement over ATA100. But honestly, I'm not sure if there are different ATA100 and ATA133 cables. I think all 40 pin ribbon cables are the same, and all 80 pin ribbon cables the same. But don't quote me on it.

You're not going to get the same level of performance as with a hard drive IMO.

A solid state drive would be a different story but I still don't think it's worth it.

SSDs reduce seek times, which might actually be a significant contributor to load times. If I had one, I'd try it just to see. I bet it would make a big difference. But SSDs are also small and expensive, so you're not actually going to want to run an Xbox with an SSD.

UPDATE:

I realized I had an AC adapter for the Xbox, so I can confirm it powers on. In fact, Tony Hawk Underground was in it. HOWEVER, still can't confirm the video. I got a universal component cable for PS2, XBox, etc. But sadly I know shit about component... this cable has red, white, red, blue, green, and YELLOW?! Where'd yellow come from? Well my TV and component VGA box are all red, white, red, blue and green. No yellow.

I can tell you the audio works. :?

You use either the R/G/B + audio for component, or yellow + audio for composite.

Since it's a universal cable, you can try it with another console you know works. If you get component out of your PS2, and then switch over to the Xbox and get nothing, it's probably the xbox. Is the ring on the front green at least?
