Post by vlame »

Why do they look exactly like fucking blockbuster dvd cases with the little security slot?

Because people are kleptos and Nintendo made them in mind to be used with a security device of some sort. At least that's what I speculate...
At least they're DVD sized; the Japanese ones are tiny to match the size of the system or some motif like that *grumble*.

I want the tiny ones. They'd save so much freakin' space. 8)

I would have applauded Nintendo if they released modestly-sides cases that matched their game discs and console. Something more akin to a CD case would have been nice (like the PSone or the Dreamcast). The only thing I never liked about the traditional CD cases was that they cracked and scratched easily. DVD cases can put up with a lot more abuse and still look decent.

I'll have to eventually rebuy all of my GCN games in Japanese, just so I can use the neat-o Japanese boxes. That'd be so ridiculous for a college dorm. :P

It's something to do with shelf presentation. It's the reason why DVD boxes are so large. They were designed that way so that 2 DVDs occupied the same space as 1 VHS when it was phased out. I assume the reason for large boxes for the games is so that they can occupy the same shelves as the rest of the games. Retailers are more likely to complain if there are lots of metal shelves exposed (makes the shop look under-stocked).

The only reason they didn't complain about the small DS boxes was that they were roughly the same size as the GBA boxes (in the UK our DS boxes are the same depth as the cardboard GBA boxes :S. They're the ugliest things i've ever seen, put it this way you can fit 2 NTSC DS cases in the same space that 1 of our chunky cases do.) so they didn't have to get new shelves, just had to relabel the point of sale. Guess it shows how much power the retailer has over this market.

I don't know why Japan always gets smaller cases though. I guess it's just something to do with their obsession with efficiency. It's inefficient to have boxes larger than needed.

There's one. Look at how thick they are! Nearly an inch thick!
