You need to slap some yellow racing stripes on this thing! (the cab... not the pony)

Yeah, I considered building my own but decided that I am not detail oriented enough to make one that looks good. Plus, I didn't want to go out and buy all the tools needed, as right now I can't see when I'd use them again.dsheinem wrote:tbh I think I have had a ton more fun building this from scratch than I would have buying a cab and trying to convert it.

Though someday when I have the room for it I'd really like to convert a cocktail cab into a super awesome Shmup-MAME-bastard.

I keep telling myself that the imperfections and problems in this project are small enough that only I will notice them when it is finished. I think most real cabs have laminate instead of painted wood, so there is something to be said for the genuine deal.MrPopo wrote:Yeah, I considered building my own but decided that I am not detail oriented enough to make one that looks good. I had almost all of the tools I have used already, with the exception of a belt sander, which I needed to get anyway, and a router, which my dad gave me. You could probably borrow most of what you need, as there's nothing really obscure in terms of the actual woodworking equipment/tools.
Aren't you going to need tools to re-purpose your cabs anyway?
Re: dsheinem's "MAME Cabinet in a Month(ish)" project
So the 2-player 6 button cab I'm just working on the inside, so a screwdriver is my primary tool. The 4-player 3 button cab I'm going to need to drill an extra hole for the 4th button per player I want, but that's just an extra drill bit, and I already have a drill set. So very minor modifications; I intentionally was looking for cabs that would fit the vast majority of arcade games without a lot of modification needed on my end. The big missing point is a spinner and trackball, but I might add that in at a later point if I feel up to it.dsheinem wrote:I keep telling myself that the imperfections and problems in this project are small enough that only I will notice them when it is finished.
