YouTube Partnership

Does anyone here have any experience with YouTube partnership?

I know the basics and there is a FAQ/Help Desk with a lot of info retaining to the terms and conditions but one thing had me confused.

I think it would be explained best if you just read the link provided to see where I am coming from. Basically you can only make money off video-game videos if they are educational or instructional. I am not sure what exactly falls under that category. I am subscribed to a couple channels who I am pretty sure have partnership, but they review games and show almost nothing but footage from the games. I am wondering if AVGN style videos count as educational/instructional or if generic reviews even count.

I have a bit of experience reviewing games, and my brother has a lot of video editing experience so we were thinking of trying to apply for partnership and making some extra money on the side. I understand that you need a certain amount of videos, subs, etc, but I am just thinking long term.

Its not that I don't want to make the reviews unless I get paid for them, but it would be nice to know if it is a possibility. There is no reason why my hobby and passion can't make me a little money. Especially if I end up buying a higher quality camera and microphone.

I want to review games but do it "in character" so it isn't just some random guy talking about games like every other video, and I was wondering if that would be considered educational or instructional.

If anyone has any info or tips I would appreciate it.

You have to have a pretty high view count to really make money on youtube. Unlike some other video services that pay from ads I've been told Youtube only pays pennies on the dollar.
Getting a partnership also seems to be about having a bit of luck. But you have to have the content first for them to review.

I know of a few people that devote their channels to doing game walkthroughs that get paid. One of which with a little over 230,000 subscribers actually makes his living off of it.

I hear you get paid by the 1000 views, can't remember where I read that though. I think you get paid more the popular you are as well. If you are really popular, you apprantly get paid $5 per 1000 views
Imagine how much Youtuber's like RWJ get. His videos regularly get one or two million views each.

I am pretty sure it depends on the type of ad's (There are the ones on the side of the page, small pop ups in the video, complete videos that play before the main video, etC), if people click the ads, etc.

I want to be a Youtube partner, but not to make money. That'd be a pain in the ass tax situation that I don't want to deal with. But I want partnership just for the privilege of choosing my own poster frame for each video instead of only the 3 crappy choices Youtube gives me based on points in the video. Would Youtube allow this or do I HAVE to monetize it? I also don't want ads.
