Weird Dreamcast memory card, can you help identify it?

Post by Scooter »

I bought some Dreamcast odds and ends for a few bucks off Craigslist. Along with it came a 3rd party memory card and I've never seen one like this. Here it is:

It is has a button on the side so I suspect it is a mega memory card and the number readout on the front lets you know which section you are in.

The odd part is the cable connection at the top:

No cable came with it, but I suspect this would connect to a computer so you can store your files on a computer and then upload and share them but that's just a guess. Any ideas about what this is for?

Not sure of that card, but it sure as hell looks cool. Now I know DC-X is a boot disk for Dreamcast, it can play imports. Maybe that card came with it in a package. Like the Gameshark CDX + Memory Card. I'm sure there is some information out there.

As for the DC-X Disk that can be viewed here

There are some cards with a port that is indeed for the purposes you specify, but they are called nexus memory cards (at least the ones I've seen), I have one but no cable

Dc-X is an import boot disc and from what I remember you could get it with or without the memory card. But i have no idea about the port.

Well, as an 8X memory card it seems to work except for one slot which won't pull up. It took a while to get the other 7 slots to work so maybe the connections are dirty. It don't think it's too full as most of the slots only have a few smaller saves.

I'll do a little net searching and see what I can learn.

I have one just like that, except the sticker is different. (it says "Massive Memory Card Plus"). When I bought it, it came with a cable and a disk. With it you could transfer your files back and forth from your computer. I would say this is the exact same card just with a different sticker. It's the same color and everything.

A word of warning, mine never worked great. It didn't fit quite perfect in the controller and would often come lose, especially if you're using a rumble pack. Also, it can corrupt files fairly easily. I tried to delete some of those corrupted files and even though the icon for the file was gone, it was still there somewhere and I never could get rid of it. Also entire pages on mine have screwed up, and I can't even access them to format them.

I wouldn't put any important files on it.

I have no intention of actually using it, I have tons of VMUs and memory cards as it is. I could have game saves for every game I have and I'd still have room for more!
