Odd PS2 problem?
Odd PS2 problem?
Sos, I went to my local Gamestop and rifled through the giant bin of less than $5 PS2 games, and amongst all the copies of resident evil and guitar hero, I picked up a few games- Siren, Manhunt, Stuntman, Cold Fear, and Kuon- all for under $10, and walked away quite pleased. Now the only problem here is when I try to play Kuon, the game starts up, displays the playstation opening stuff, and the developer and publisher logos but then after that the screen just goes black. It is i fairly good condition, so I don't believe its a problem with the game disc being scratched/smudged. The only way I can get it to do anything is to put in a memory card that is full, and it will say "the memory card is fulll, put in a new one, continue without saving etc." Any suggestions on how to get the game to work?

It's probably just damaged beyond the point of working. Even if it looks fine, it could have been re-surfaced after receiving a really deep scratch that's still causing trouble. Or, maybe it just has 1 scratch in that special place that renders the game useless. Anyway, since it was only $5 or less, I wouldn't get too upset.

The disc does appear to have a very small hole in it when held up to the light... Well, they're getting another copy for me so all is good.

Out of interest, how serious is the problem of disc rot? It seems to be becoming more and more of an issue, but I find the claims on this site to be a bit exaggerated. Either that or the guy is incredibly unlucky.
I have a couple of hundred disc based games across various platforms, and I am starting to get worried and considering concentrating on cartridge systems more form now on. That said, I haven't really come across any disc rot as of yet and I'm constantly buying games and checking. The only disc rot I've found is on an audio CD I have. Slipknot's Iowa to be precise.

Carts are always repairable though, whereas you can never fix disc rot.
