Ok, so lately I've been really nostalgic. I'm basically playing the old Final Fantasy, Shining Force, and Phantasy Star games. But I'm looking for one I can't think of and I need help figuring out just what the hell I'm thinking about.
-I think its a standard, turn-based RPG similar to FF.
-Based on what I remember of the intro, I think it has to be on Sega CD or greater.
Intro:
There's some epic battle in space.. All you see is tons of explosions in space as if you're watching from hundreds of miles away. They're fighing this battle in japanimation style large robots. Some explosion happens and sends one of these bots out of the battle... also killing the pilot. After getting lost in space, the bot crash lands on a planet that's in WoW phase of evolution. Without a pilot, the mecha or whatever goes on a rampage, destroying everything. Seven or so of that planet's strongest wizards take on the massive machine and subdue and bury it. Now, hundreds or maybe thousands of years later, some goofnut is trying to resurrect it and use it to rule the world.
Please help me figure out just WTF this game is.

Sounds like Vay.

Awesome. I played it a few years ago and it holds up pretty well if you like grindy JRPGs. Pretty nice animated cutscenes too.

Well, its from Working Designs so yep, its a grind-a-thon. (See Lunar)
I've been looking for an old school RPG to get into since I quit WoW and I've already played through FF3(us) like, 4 times. All I could remember of Vay was the intro and what an awesome premise it was. I know I played it when I had the SCD, but I can't recall if I ever finished it. I'm also partial to the Shining series.
