Megadrive mkII A/V mod problem.

Post by Demented Collector »

Hi peeps,

Decidded to try the MD a/v mod as it looked fairly easy to a beginer.

I've installed 3 phono plugs at the rear of my MD2. :)

Using the following diagram I've done the wiring..
Image
Pins 1,2 audio l/r
Pin 4 for picture

When hooked up to my crt it works great, the improvement is vast.
However on my lcd the picture keeps changing from perfect to black and white with ghosting.
It happens when directly connected or via an a/v splitter box.

Anyone any ideas why it's doing this?

Thanks. :)

If you use the Genesis AV cable, do you still get the problem?

My MD/GEN AV cable has an RF male end to it.

Haven't tried the AV cable on my LCD, not sure how to tune it in.
On my CRT it was OK, abit of snowing which led me to try the aV mod.

After the mod the picture on the crt is great using the AV/L/R input.

When I connect it to the LCD via AV/L/R it alternates between a perfect picture and a black and white image with heavy ghosting.

I really appreciate your comments. :)

Hmm, I don't really know. I'm not exactly at the top of my game right now  I've got a lot of things on my mind.

I was hoping you had a composite AV Genesis cable. That way you could use it on your LCD and if the problem persists then you'd know it's probably the TV. If the problem went away, then you'd know it's something with the RCA jacks you added. If you only have the RF adapter for it, you wont be able to use that for testing this theory.

So about the mod, you just jumped the composite and audio pins off the AV multi out and added the RCA jacks on the back of the console? You mentioned being a beginner to modding, are you sure all your solder joints are good? Post a clear pic if you can. My thinking is that if there's a weak joint then there's a weak signal. Maybe your CRT is more forgiving to the weak signal then your LCD.

Hobie... can you smell the link coming?

Great informative link, thanks.

I now know how to solder properly. :D

I'll redo the mod this weekend and report back, but I suspect it's the LCD that is the problem.

Thanks again for your help guys. 8)

If you have bad solder joints, you'll have to do one of two things to fix it. One, you can completely clean the solder off (you need a desolder bulb or braid or something like that) and then resolder everything correctly. Or two, you can leave the solder on and try and just fix it with flux. If you have a liquid or paste flux, apply some to the bad solder joint then put the iron to it to melt the solder. The flux will do it's thing, then remove the iron. Most of the time, you'll end up with a good solder joint after that. Make sure to clean the excess flux off with alcohol.

I finally got a kester flux pen, and that made a world of difference to my soldering.
