Suggest Me A Laptop
I'm in the market for a laptop, I'd like to get one this week but I need some help choosing. I'd like one that can do just about anything. I'll pay up to around 1200 at the most but I'm looking to go cheaper. So far, I've looked at the ASUS G-Series gaming laptops.
Re: Suggest Me A Laptop
Dude.
More info please. What are you looking for in your laptop? What are you going to use it for? How long do you want to keep it? etc.
My generic answer would be "buy the one where you get a free xbox 360".

Gaming (All current games on highest settings)
HD video editing
regular everyday internet use
1920x1080 resolution
6-8gb or RAM
1tb HDD space, willing to go down to 500gb if i must
Prefer to spend less than 1200
I plan to keep it for as long as possible. until modern video games don't work on it.
Most of the "good" ones I look at have bad customer reviews.
Here's one that's on sale at a local shop for 999.99, what do you think?

Seems a little pricey.darthmunky wrote: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en/ho ... 28869.html
Re: Suggest Me A Laptop
honestly I think it's going to cost a lot more than $1200 for a laptop that can play "all current games at highest settings" at 1920x1080.....most mobile graphics cards aren't nearly as powerful as their desktop counterparts...
or maybe I'm just that out of touch with laptops these days....

Well for 200$ off 1200$, it seems okay to me. I mean it's got 1tb of HDD space, 8gb of ram and a good graphics card. Not 1920x1080 though, not that big of a deal I guess. Plus all the customer reviews are 4/5 and 5/5. I couldn't find any negative comments anywhere on the net except one guy who says the small mouse is hard to get used to.Luke wrote:Seems a little pricey.darthmunky wrote: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en/ho ... 28869.html

Re: Suggest Me A Laptop
I have never heard good things about Asus laptops; flimsy build quality, low reliability, and dreadful customer service are the main complaints I have come across. As for the HP dv7; I can speak personally on that one, since it is my main computer, and am the one I am using right now [I am actually going to also be upgrading this week, if I'm lucky!]. The laptop is generally fine, but my big complaint is that it gets dusty and dirty inside the computer VERY easily, making it heat up and making the fan blow constantly. It's a big problem with the design, and one I hope HP has fixed by now. Also, the keyboard is kind of flimsy and not very satisfying to use, but that is a minor issue.

Do NOT get an HP. Ever. Don't get an HP. I hear Asus laptops are like the happy unicorn bringers that feed all the starving children in Africa of laptops. A friend of mine got this one:

He says it was the greatest investment he will have ever made. He can run every modern PC game he has ever tried out, and they look beautiful. Along with the occasional Steam title, and Gamecube emulation.

Really? I have heard nothing but horror stories about anything that Asus touches. (i.e Breaking only after a few months of moderate use, the company not honoring warranties, really cheap plastic casing, excessive weight, etc.) Also, my Dad has been using an HP desktop for over 7 years now, and it hasn't given him a single issue.scarper wrote:Do NOT get an HP. Maybe it's just me but I consider the keyboard to be one of the number one things I look for in a computer. It could serve me lattes and massage my feat but if it has a crappy keyboard I want nothing to do with it.lisalover1 wrote: Also, the keyboard is kind of flimsy and not very satisfying to use, but that is a minor issue.
That said, I'm not going to call anybody stupid for wanting to game on a laptop, I do it all the time, but you need to think about what you're costing yourself in terms of other things that (most people) would consider important.
While you may think you're getting top of the line performance with portability, all you're really getting is top of the line performance (at the time, you can't upgrade very much in laptops). I've yet to see a decent "gaming" laptop that was:
Under $1400
Under 6lbs
Under 1.25" thick
Able to get more than 3 hours battery life.
This said, if you really want to PC game then please do yourself a favor and get a desktop PC. It's cheaper, you can upgrade it, and, as a general rule it's less likely to break. If you're sold on a laptop but still want to game, it would probably be a better choice to go with an upper midrange laptop that could still be a decent portable device when you don't want to game.
Lenovo has some great performance laptops in consumer and prosumer forms. Considering your budget, you may want to look into the Y series laptops. My dad owned one for a while and it was built just as good as any HP laptop and was very capable in terms of gaming performance.
Edit: In the end I suggest getting any laptop you want, You haven't exactly made clear how long you'll be keeping it, whether you need it to be portable, or anything like that. This was all written based on my experiences and what I consider important which may not be important to you at all! Just trying to stir some ideas in your head.
