As far as the points thing goes, I too have lost a 100 or so points for an 8th or 9th place "win" but then again I'm at 68xx points right now.
I've received about 80~90 points for a 1st place win but that was when I finished maybe 10 seconds ahead of 2nd place; and I also recall that most of the players were in the low to mid-5000's. Perhaps that has something to do with it?
And yes, the 1st place barrage of bullets does suck when you're trying to recoup a decent place win.

My last time online, I got hit 5 times in a row with the f'n blue shell of pain.

I am just pissed that they took out Lan play. So now I need 4 Wiis, instead of the current two cubes.

It looks like fun, but I won't be picking it up any time soon. I'll wait until it's cheaper. My favorite Mario Kart game has been and always will be Double Dash, and considering I know this game is not as good as that one, I'll wait until this one is cheaper to buy it.

I assume it's the same for all versions (JP, US, EU); it's on your user profile on the screen where you can select different users.

I think £35 for a game and a wheel is pretty good, I was expecting to pay £45-50 for the set so I'm pretty pleased with that. I'll be getting this next pay day for def, the online play is a big draw for me

It's not exactly a 'wheel' though is it? I mean yes it's a piece of plastic shaped like a wheel. It's hardly a peripheral though. Just piece of molded plastic with a button that probably costs less than 50p to make. It doesn't do anything that just holding your wii remote sideways does. I can't see the point of it. I'm glad it's free though. If it was more with the wheel i'd be a bit pissed off but as it is, it makes no difference so, meh!

I definitely think that Classic controller is the best way to play.

Yeah I retardedly picked up a second wheel for my g/f and we both like the nunchuk/wiimote combo better.

On the otherhand, it flies pretty well~
