PS Move and Kinect = Sega 32X

Post by Anayo »

I see the Playstation Move and Kinect as a 21st century Sega 32X. Both appear to me like overpriced add-ons that make a negligible contribution to the systems for which they're designed. I can think of plenty of games I'd buy a PS3 or XBOX 360 for, but these motion controlled add ons to me just scream 'optional'!

Does my Sega 32X analogy seem reasonable in your opinion?

not really. The big difference is nobody was convinced to buy a 32X. Don't get me wrong. I'm not much impressed with motion control add-ons. I don't own Move yet, as I see no reason to. But seriously. They're both way out-selling what 32X did. Because of that, they'll be supported WAY more.

Move and Kinect are more akin to an alternate reality in which the Casio Loopy was successful.

both came on way too late to be a success, only if it came out during the time of the wii then it would gain some grounds.

As of right now most people are used to motion controlls and prefer to buy a wii thats built around motion controlls than a pricy add on thats years late of time.

The wii already won with the motion sensor controlls..

So, awhile back, when I was active on a different forum, there was a guy who was constantly talking about how ever since the N64, Nintendo was trying to "play catch-up" to Sony. When Sony announced the PS Move, I quickly hacked this together for him:

hiya Anayo i think your right and your Topic subject is hilarious. IMO both Kinect and Move are a sad joke.

All i want are Arcade games Ported to Console , the above devices are killing the Arcades. Most of the new generation of kids dont go to the Arcades and spend money anymore

really? So I guess your arcade didn't have light gun games then? Because light gun games -- a fond arcade memory for me -- is precisely why I would consider buying Move. For now it's just Time Crisis 4 and the upcoming HOTD Overkill (which I already own for Wii, but we'll see how the bonus content is)... but if more quality light gun games were released on PS3, I'd almost argue that motion controls are keeping arcade games alive in a time when LCD/LED/Plasma attempted to kill (some of) them.

I tend to consider motion controls as being akin to light guns in past generations as well. They're appropriate sometimes, and when they are it's hard to see any other control mechanism working as well.

I wouldn't compare the non-Wii motion controls to the 32X. If you want to consider them as "catch up" devices, then maybe the 6-button Genesis (or Duo) controllers... Certainly not as bad as the Activator (anyone else have one as a kid?), or even 32X (bought one of those new as well).

I owned a 32X for a while and didn't see any games that could outperform the SNES or coprocessor-endowed Genny/SNES games, like Star Fox or Virtua Racing. In that respect it did seem very much like a "catch up" device, since it just added more colors, sprite scaling/rotation, and crude polygon graphics... most of which could just be had on the SNES anyway.

Granted it cost more than Kinect or PSMove ($200 I think). But I couldn't mentally justify getting a more than $100 Kinect or a $70 PSMove when I could get a $200 brand new Wii or a $100 used one. That thing was built from the ground up for motion controls.

Now that I read some other posts in this topic though, I went and looked up sales figures and I gotta agree the Kinect isn't the flop I thought. A quick google search turned up that the 32X didn't even push 1 million units, whereas Kinect has topped 10 million already.
