Rubble Trouble Tokyo

It's another game from Nitrome. How do they release so many great games?

In Rubble Trouble Tokyo you are part of a demolition crew that uses everything from bombs to Mechamonsters to destroy the buildings that need to come down. If you were more the kind of kid that liked to smash the Lego building apart rather than build it up, then this is the game for you.

Paper Moon

Paper Moon is a clever platform game from Infinite Ammo Games, who made Aquaria and are working on the fascinating looking project Marian. This game uses stereoscopic 3D and requires you to make figure/background distinctions of paper cutout characters and environments to solve puzzles. It's fun and clever and won the IGF grand prize back in 2007, so you might have seen this before.

The End

Image
*Click to Play*

The End begins with your death.

From there, you travel through the mind, body, and spirit worlds to answer heady existential questions about life, death, suicide, science, faith... oh yeah, and to jump around and collect bonus stars!

Basically it's a platformer/physics puzzle game with board-game-style boss battles, but it's wrapped up with lots of probing philisophical questions and symbolic imagery to make answering the Big questions in life a little more fun. The game manages to avoid being overly preachy by asking more questions than it provides answers. It basically lets you pick your own path, and then gives you some fun puzzles and platforming to let you explore those choices in an entertaining semi-symbolic way. It's a fascinating concept piece that manages to stay light hearted and fun in the face of death and philosophy.

Saved By The Bell (an interactive youtube game)

Image

This is Saved By The Bell re-imagined as an Earthbound style RPG... well, visually anyway. There isn't much gameplay here. Since it's a YouTube game, it's pretty much just a choose-your-own-adventure video. Nevertheless, if you're familiar with the show, there are a lot of fun in-jokes and classic scenes re-enacted (like Jessie's famous caffeine pill addiction scene. haha!)

I love Zany Golf so I'm going to see if I try this one!

Edit: Played it, loved it :) Thanks! There should be more games like this.

The Book of Living Magic

Image

The Book of Living Magic is an adventure game that looks like an old children's book and reads like an old text based videogame such as Zork or The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. While the puzzle solving is point-A-to-point-B simple, the storytelling is grand, imaginative, and utterly charming. The Book of Living Magic creates a child-like world concerned with odd curiosities and is pre-occupied with not being dull. It's simple and random at the same time. The images all look like they were drawn with kindergarten supplies and would probably give off a heavy aroma of Mr. Sketch's fruit scented markers if computers could transmit scent. Just about every crayon-drawn item on the screen can be clicked on and has a silly story or punny joke to go with it. This all gives the game a playful old-school adventure charm that you don't see much these days, even in the point & click titles out there. It's heavy on the text, but if you'll give it your attention, it's delightful story telling.

No Place Like Home

Image

There are a lot of "room escape" games out there. I really dislike a lot of them. This one has a strange off-kilter vibe to it though with lots of odd allusions to The Wizard of Oz. The game feels a little creepy and a little dreamy, so if you haven't given this genre a try yet, this is a decent starting place.

I liked No Place Like Home, I thought some of the puzzles didn't make enough sense to figure out w/o a walkthrough though.
