Does PS2 Action Replay work on a BC PS3?

Post by noiseredux »

I obviously know that the AR disc will boot in a backwards compatible PS3, but will it be usable? I mean, will the PS3 allow me to enter the code and then swap the actual game disc just like a PS2? Probably not, huh?

Not sure, maybe the PS3 eject detection may work different. I do know NONE of the cheat discs will install let alone work thru HDAvance/HDLoader install.

the funny thing is, I don't own an AR. I don't need one. Have no real interest. BUT I can't help but be curious about these sorts of things. Haha.

you will have to mod your ps3 one of two ways.

First you can simply disassemble the top part of it so that you can have direct access to the drive. Once it's time to swap discs you can lift the top off the drive and swap discs, then place the top back on. There's are videos on youtube of people doing it.

Second you can add a switch to the ps3 that will power up the ejection mechanism. I have also seen this done in videos. Basically you can make the ps3 eject the disc without even knowing it did so.

I was going to offer to test it since I have an action replay, but then I read deathsled's post...

I didn't realize it was a complicated issue like that. I don't understand though, the eject button stops working?

Edit:

Of course, it suddenly occurs to me that without the action replay memory card you probably can't do anything at all.

You may not have to do the mods, the Action Replay Disc might work. Dammit noise, now I am curious if AR will load and allow switching to a game disc on an Emotion Chip PS3.

@ CFFJR - Can you give that PS2 AR disc a full test on your BC PS3?

I certainly can if you like, but the thing is the PS2 action replay comes with both the boot disc and a unique memory card that must be inserted into slot b on a ps2. I imagine without that memory card, the AR wouldn't work on a PS2, much less the slot-less PS3.

However, having said that, I'll still be happy to at least try it out and see what happens.

I'll get back to you and let you know what it does.

Give it a try
I know PS1 AR discs and older Gamecube AR's needed a memory card with the boot file saved. I didn't know the PS2 AR versions needed a similar boot file on a memory card. I have Action Replay Max and there is no memory card. I did get the latest game cheats downloaded to a memory card before PS2 support went away, but not needed to run the PS2 Action Reply.

Really? How odd, I also have the ARMax, and it came with a card. I guess there was a revision.

I'll definitely try it though, not to worry.

Alrighty, I tried it out, and here's the deal.

Putting the disc in my PS3, once I started it up it took a very long time (30 seconds) just for it to show the Playstation 2 logo screen. After that, the screen goes dark and everything stops.

I gave it a couple of minutes just to be sure, and nothing.

So, PS3 verdict: never mind the eject issue, it doesn't even load.

Just to be sure my disc hadn't gone to crap on me, I popped it in my PS2 (which took a lot of futzing around behind the tv to hook it up, so, you know, be grateful. ) without the memory card. It did boot, but while it was loading I was prompted to insert the card ("hardware") and it can't be started without it.

So there you have it.
