Need ideas for CD/DVD storage...

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Need ideas for CD/DVD storage...

Post by Flak Beard »

Right now I feel like all my media is stored pretty sloppily, so I'm looking for ways to get it organized. Let's start with my music...

I have somewhere between 200 and 300 music CDs, all with jewel cases. Right now there are just sitting in a huge Rubbermaid container. I really want to have my CD collection accessible without such a large container. I was thinking of getting a DJ case the holds each CD and booklet in a sleeve. Something like this:

I would probably store the jewel cases with the tray art in a box somewhere. Does anyone know if there is a similar solution that would allow me to condense the CD collection size-wise, but keep all the art in one place and throw out the jewel cases? Also, are these DJ case sleeves safe for discs?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now games. Right now I have a single, four tier bookshelf where I keep most of my games that are either in jewel cases or DVD cases. I ran out of room, so PS1, DC, GBA and Gamecube stuff is all stacked on top. It looks pretty bad and I'd rather only keep my more current stuff (360/PS2) out in the open anyway. My fiancee and I want to build a sleek looking entertainment room, with a "less is more" look to it. I was thinking of ordering these as a means to store all my other games out of sight:

I think solid plastic containers would keep out moisture more, but I can't really find anything that is specifically designed for DVD/CD cases. If anyone here has any other ideas, please let me know. :D

For some of my bulk storage, I've been moving stuff to those big binders.
I used to use boxes like those a bit, but they are harder to browse through.
Something to keep in mind....

By binder, do you mean something like this?

Having the older games being immediately accessible is not as important to me. I'm really looking for something to keep my collection nice. In fact, I'll probably be storing a lot of the games in poly sleeves like these.

I just use binders and sleeves too. I got a bunch of cheap-o ones that hold 96 discs a few years ago from Office Depot and they're still going strong. Great for quick access and I just store away the cases and manuals. They're not much to look at though and it sounds like you want a compact storage solution that also happens to display your collection nicely.

Something like this would be perfect for the games. Just a stackable plastic storage box with flat sides.

Unfortunately it's a UK seller. All the stuff like this at Walmart or similar stores seems to have angled sides.

for storing the actual discs, i really like discgear products. just don't buy them brand new! they're really expensive:

i got one of those but slightly different that holds 100 discs for only $4 at a savers near my place! i also have 2 of the ones pictured in a link i got for free from a family member. i've used binders in the past, but my discs would get scuffed from time to time

Ok, I'm actually thinking of getting this for my music CDs...

And then storing all the booklets and tray art in poly sleeves away somewhere, so I can toss my jewel cases...

Do these binders mess up CDs when you start filling them up? The one I listed holds 328 discs, which most of it I will use.

That's not a bad idea for a case. I got a 400 disc one that I use for Wii and PS2 games. It has straps inside it to keep the pages from moving around too much.

I just hope the one you buy doesn't make you pull out the plastic "V" shaped pieces to open all the sleeves up like mine did.

I got it from Newegg... out of stock now though

This one has enough room to put all my discs and art on the other side. Thing is, I would worry about the booklets getting circled impressions in them from the pressure of having so many discs inside.

Yea. I would worry about that. I would leave the art in another case somewhere. I know that would make it hard to go through to find the one you want, but it's better than destroying it.
