Where To Buy Gaming Shelves?

Post by darthmunky »

I'm looking to get shelves for my gaming collection. I want console-specific shelves too. Like size-wise. Example: For my SNES collection, I want the shelf to be able to fit one snes game out from the wall, I don't want to double layer the stacks. I'm trying to avoid custom shelving as I suck at building stuff and I don't want to spend a fortune getting someone else to make me one. Any help would be much appreciated.

building shelves is by far the single easiest thing you can possibly build. Best part is that they're kinda hard to fuck up. Just build.

Most hardware stores like Lowe's and Home Depot will cut wood for you into whatever sizes you need for free, so you don't even need a saw.

shelving for CD/DVDs fit NES carts and most boxed games pretty well.

Seconded. CD/DVD shelves are perfect. I use them for my collection.

Last time I needed a gaming shelf, I placed a rectangular piece of plywood on top of two cinder blocks. It's butt-ugly, but gets the job done.

The thing with most DVD shelves is that they're too deep. When I put a SNES game on them, I want the game to touch the back but not have a big empty space in front of it.

Oh! You want storage for loose carts? That'll be tricky to find, since carts aren't very tall (aside from NES). There are shelves for decorative knick knacks, but they wouldn't work for a larger collection. You'll have better luck building them yourself.

Yeah, basically I need enough shelves to fill a wall's worth of loose NES, SNES, & N64 carts as well as boxed GameCube games.

Definately make them yourself - since you want them custom. You determine material / color / size / location - etc. Last thing you want is to be beholden to some manufacturers set sizing and waste 8" on a wall or what have you.

The shelves themselves, you can get any grade wood in any dimension. So pick the size you want based on the wall you are mounting to and based on the depth of the game.

1"x6"x(how every many feet) and then choose your lumber. You can go fairly cheap / but nice w/a Select Pine, or go very nice w/a Mahogany or Cherry Premium board (also available at any Lowe's / Home Depot) in all dimensions.

Brackets = a million ways to go, depending on your carpentry skills and your aesthetic preferences.

If you like, I am happy to post pics of some of the things i've done to display my games.

The best part, beside cost and customization, is that this is very basic stuff - and save some staining/polying, very very easy for a novice carpenter. You really only need 2 tools for the entire job (a miter / table / or Circular saw, and a drill). (Could be done w/handsaw as well if you don't have any of the others).
