It seems I'll also need a tape drive to play a lot of the games so any advice there would be welcome.

Commodore 64 Game Recommendations.
I was able to snatch a C64 + 1541 drive + 1702 monitor for $35 last week but it didn't come with a power supply so while I look for one I was hoping to grab some games so I'm ready to use it. I don't know much about the C64 or what's good on it so I was hoping to find some recommendations

If you're buying US games, they're pretty much disk or cart. Europe is where all the tape games were. http://www.lemon64.com is a pretty good place to look around at reviews and read up a bit. As far as suggesting games, what genres do you like?

I recently found two C64's, one in the box, with a ton of complete games in great shape in my parents attic. The only thing I couldn't find was the power supply. They go for around 40 dollars but I've read that they can be very unreliable. Anyone know of any good alternatives?

They fixed the later power supplies I believe. I have 2 different types of C64 power supplies, but I can't remember which is earlier for certain. I think the lighter smooth one is older because it has all of the pins in the plug. The ones that are ridged and would look right at home next to a PS2 are a lot heavier and only have the 4 needed pins in the plug which I would think would be a cost saving measure in ones made later. Heavier in older power supplies usually means that they're a lot more durable.Pabstblueribbon wrote:I recently found two C64's, one in the box, with a ton of complete games in great shape in my parents attic. I'd poke around some C64 sites to be sure though.

M.U.L.E. looks pretty good even though I rarely play RTS games but I can't find it anywhere. I'll keep an eye out for it as long as I don't have to pay $$$ to obtain it.
The only ones on my mind were Sword of Fargoal and Ultima, which I couldn't find online except for an expensive listing on eBay. Guess it's not the place for C64.
Thanks for the replies guys, I'll keep a look out
Ah I see, didn't know that. Also explains why most tapes were in the UK. Lemon64 looks a lot like www.lemonamiga.com... Oh wait xD I'll definitely look around for whatever looks good. I'm mostly looking for RPG's but I'd usually go for anything good.Hobie-wan wrote:If you're buying US games, they're pretty much disk or cart. I'm jealous, I would have paid $35 for just the 1702. You have a 1541 drive, you can make or buy a cable to dump C64 disk images onto floppy. Get some 5.25" DSDD floppy disks and you are good to go. This is the cheap and most compatible method, but you need a working 1541 which is hit and miss.
For games, try Maniac Mansion, Starflight, Wasteland, Space Rogue, Pool of Radiance, well maybe that's enough for now. The C64 is a great system for early CRPGs. Although, be prepared for a lot of disk swapping and load times.
Sword of Fargaol is a short simple roguelike. Ultima I is mostly interesting from a historical perspective. Both worth playing but not AAA titles for the C64. Ultima IV would be a better choice to start with.

Re: Commodore 64 Game Recommendations.
The easiest thing to do would be to get a C128 power supply and change the plug for a 7 pin din. Those supplies are much more stable, but also lower in supply and higher in demand. The other alternative is adapting a PC power supply, which should be a straightforward electronics project. You may need a 9v voltage regulator depending on what SID you have.Pabstblueribbon wrote:I recently found two C64's, one in the box, with a ton of complete games in great shape in my parents attic. You can also hook up the C64 to the big screen. 8-bit computers have cartridge game ports, the forgotten "game consoles."
Cliff Hanger, only on the C64.

Good point. The C-64 comes with s-video out on it's AV port too. Generally you need to build your own mini-din cable though.CRTGAMER wrote:You can also hook up the C64 to the big screen. 8-bit computers have cartridge game ports, the forgotten "game consoles."
