Re: Austin, TX Racketboy meets -planning Guardian Heroes HD meet
I forgot to post. I was able to catch the last couple of hours of the Final Fantasy event at Game Over. It was pretty fun. Those poor guys were barely 1/4th into Final Fantasy VII. Advent Children was cheesier than I remembered it. Maybe because I watched the subbed version. Ehrgiez was still up and running and it was surprisingly better than I remembered. I owned the game over a decade ago, but it has been that long since I played. They actually had two LCDs set up back to back with two PSPs connected in TV mode for the Dissidia tournament. Cool stuff. I wish I had been there an hour earlier when it was going on.

Was it the original Dissidia? Man, I really wanted to play that against some real people.

About a month ago, I mentioned in this thread that there would be a screening of Aliens downtown. If you are curious how that turned out, you can watch this video here. Just like with the Predator video, the video's intent is not to show the movie, but rather show the experience. As you probably have gathered by now, I am a firm believer that watching a classic movie in a real theater packed with devoted fans is 10 times better than watching it by yourself, no matter how HD or 3D or Dolby your home theater is. To put it in terms more related to this forum, it's the difference between playing Guardian Heroes by yourself and playing with five other people sitting next to you.
Anyway, in this video, you can really get a feel for how engrossed in the movie the audience was. It was really cool when Ripley appeared in the Power Loader and the audience began cheering.

Yep, the first one.quintorro wrote:Was it the original Dissidia? Man, I really wanted to play that against some real people.
Man, that is so awesome. I keep missing out on these. I think the only way I'm going to make it is if I get the wife on board and find a ride. Me and evening weekend parking downtown do not mix. I think I can live with missing Aliens and Predator. Now... if they do Terminator 2 and I miss that...Redline9 wrote:About a month ago, I mentioned in this thread that there would be a screening of Aliens downtown. A Play N Trade recently opened up in North Austin. However, their current retro game inventory is pretty limited and poses no threat to Game Over. However, they do have a large gaming area in the back with about 7 LCDs and they will supposedly have periodic tournaments. When I went to check out the store, there was a Halo: Combat Evolved LAN tournament going on. However, the competition was rather lame and most of the players appeared too young to have caught Halo the first time around in 2001. Meh. Hopefully, there's some cool tournaments coming, but it'll probably just be the latest Call of Duty. All in all, this place is probably not worth visiting for the time being. But, I just wanted to mention it in case anyone else hears about it and they're curious. (I had come across a print ad here and there and decided to swing by the place.)

I was really sad to see the one in Round Rock go. They never had much of a retro section either. Everything they did have was under priced, however.Redline9 wrote:A Play N Trade recently opened up in North Austin. Anderson Ln is kind of out of the way in this heat. Maybe I can make it by there during lunch one day.

I am not sure if he will post here or not, but Siren dropped by Game Over and picked up his Virtua Stick. Seems to be doing a-ok. He contacted me through my youtube channel.

Check out the pic that Pinballz tweeted:
a Street Fighter 2: CE machine is now on the floor!
Ha, they put it right next to Mortal Kombat. I was hoping they would get SF2. There's a SF2 machine at Kung Fu Saloon, but the joysticks are completely crapped out, rendering it too frustrating to play.
I'm looking forward to my next visit to the arcade...

Played it last week or so. It's not in the best condition. The screen's kinda blurry.
